Generally, students are there for either the semester or the year. You can be a "welcome" family, however, and if you do that, the student would stay with you for a month or so until another family decided to have the exchange student live with them for the remaining time. There shouldn't be a problem with traveling back and forth between parents so long as the school district is the same, but you will have to check with the program to make sure. You get to "choose" the exchange student: it gives you a short biography, their likes and dislikes, and their country. You later get to read a longer letter and see pictures to finalize your choice. Try looking at IES for getting in contact with someone who would be able to help you. ASSE is another choice. They're both reputable and are for high school students. Good luck!
