Do I pay state taxes if I am a NM resident receiving a graduate student stipend from an alaskan university?
I am a resident of New Mexico in grad school in Alaska. Since Alaska has no state income tax, do I then file state taxes with New Mexico for my research assistant stipend?

I don't believe stipends are taxable. But if you get a W-2 or a 1099, file in Alaska to prove residency. Unless you need to file in NM to qualify for next year's financial aid.

I am Venezuelan National, With a F-1 Visa and currently enrolled for the next semester. I am going to Mexico for 10 days and returning. Would it be different? Would it be a harder entry? This is my 5th semester but I only entered the US by an airport. What would I need?

I am in middle school and I don't know if there are any programs out there for me. I'm interested in going to a spanish speaking country. (Aside from Mexico.) Help!?

For a semester or year program, you have to be at least 15. 16 is better, in your junior year of high school. However, this isn't a bad thing. It gives you lots of time to work on your language skills AND to raise money, because programs are expensive. Also, it will also help going into high school knowing you want to do this because your counselor will help you arrange your schedule so you can graduate on time. When the time comes, I recommend one of the top three organizations -- YFU, AFS or Rotary Exchange.

Of course you can participate in a Spanish speaking country exchange program. I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! And we learned so much!!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with! The program is really well planned out and people are lovely! Many host families have teens. They even allow you to come with a friend to stay in same host family home or in a different home. And if you sign up early they allow you to choose from the available host families for a perfect fit. my passport expired. but im planning on going to tj. with hannah, my austrailian exchange student so that means i cant do sentri because i dont want her to walk across alone. but they will for sure check my passport if i do. which is expored. ill bring my passport my birthcertificate id school id whatelse? what do you think?

You can still use your Drivers License as identification until January 31, 2008. Absolutely no changes will be made in regards to identification requirements prior to January 31, 2008. yes you can use your birth certificate, drivers license, social security card. school id possibly. I've been to Mexico a few times and they let me come back to the states with proof of drivers license since i didn't have a passport at the time. but i brought the other items just in case. I'm Mexican by the way but i have light skin so i thought for sure I'd get stuck and speaking English and Spanish very fluent hahaha but no. all went well :) have fun. *be careful about the taxi drivers. right when you cross the boarder they will hound you. some taxi drivers are crooked. some on purpose drive you to your location but pretend to get lost to make more money. DO NOT get into a cab if it doesn't look real or if it looks really ghetto and no company info on the doors. makes sure its nice from the outside and looks like a cab. Trust me on this.

I have two cousins in Mexico who want to come here in NJ and finish their studies. One of them has just finished college and has her medicine degree. she wants to become a gynecologist,but wants to finish her studies here. The other one wants to be a graphc designer and she also wants to know what schools in NJ she should go to. I dont think they have a visa .what type of forms should they fill out in order to come here?

my 15 year old little sister's dream is to learn as many languages as she can, so she thinks being a foreign exchange student is a great opertunity for her, which i totaly agry with. But the problem is we just moved here in the States from Mexico, and my mom doesn't really want to loose her, but my sister is being totaly independent and finding everything out to be able to live her dream. But what i wanna know is if it going to be to hard,, or is it in some way posible?

If you look up the history of Swine flu , it has been around for about 50 years or so. And some of the outbreaks originated in the United States. I guess Americans are the cleanest people in the world. We don't have a gang problem, corruption, bad economics, diseases, college student running around doing inappropriate behavior. I'm glad to be American, but we can just put the blame on other countries all the time.

Now the murder rate in Mexico is going thru the roof in drug wars and the illegal drug trade is closer to the USA than it was before. So the real question is.. How's your Spanish? You need to pass the very difficult entrance exam in Spanish to even have a chance. Get your GED apostilled. That is done by the Secretary of state of whatever state you live in. Without the apostille and an official translation into Spanish your GED won't work. Mexico has no such thing as a GED, and the grade system is from 1-10. Grade averages don't matter as much as passing an entrance exam. Private universities are very easy to enter into in Mexico: No entrance exam, no final exams, no thesis and you can go to med or law school right after high school.

Do you think that the govenment should build a big wall between mexico and the US?
I heard that a group of people started building a wall already and that if the government doesn't help that they will keep building one. I personally have nothing against Mexicans but I think that they shouldn't come here illegally. It makes it harder for schools to try and teach students who don't speak english(but that can be fixed). It is also hard for hospitals to deal with people who don't have health care. Some people say that we should help mexico and then they wouldn't have to come over here. Well it's not America's job to go out and help every country. It's sad. If I could I'd try and help mexico by building better towns for them and safer areas.

If we want to improve immigration relations between our two neighboring countries we should help the Mexican people instead of exploiting them with sweat shops and the like, causing them to try to escape the poverty in their own country. We, as Americans have to force our companies to either keep their factories in the US and pay Americans a fare wage or when they get to other countries to pay those countries' residents a fair wage! Corporations are hurting Americans who need jobs and Mexicans who also need jobs! The issue is much simpler than we are being led to believe. Good fences make good neighbors. I have nothing against Mexicans and I even have some respect for those who cross illegally. However, the skills that help them survive the desert are not the same as what is needed once they get here. I think it would be better for all involved if they came into the country legally because we'd know who they are and have control over who is allowed in. We could enforce standards such as not having a criminal record. It would be better for the workers. They would only be allowed into the country if they were guaranteed work. With the loss of cheap illegal labor, employers will have the option of hiring not quite so cheap but legally. They may even choose to relocate to Mexico wich would help the Mexican economy without probably hurting the US very much because much of the money was going to Mexico before anyway. It would be also better for the families who remain behind in Mexico because they wouldn't have to live with the constant possibility of having their loved one and source of income get deported. It would even be better for the Mexican government because it could know where its citizens are.

Besides didn't you know that there are also tunnels going from Mexico to the U.S. They use those also to come over illegally and to transport drugs. I agree that more should be done to stop Mexicans from crossing the border illegally. I can't believe that we give them welfare checks, medicaid and schools loans and they can't even speak our language. Maybe a huge electric fence that would send a million volts into their Mexicans asses and cook'em like re-fryed beans is a good idea...just a thought.

Yes, the government should build a wall on the US/Mexico border. When illegal Mexicans come to the US they take jobs away from US citizens.(I have nothing against Mexicans.) I have a solution. China has a labor shortage. So, all of the illegal immigrants should be shipped to China. That would solve all our problems. China would no longer have a labor shortage, the US wouldn't have to deal with illegal immigrants and the immigrants would have jobs.

I agree completely with norton2628. A wall isn't the answer. Besides didn't you know that there are also tunnels going from Mexico to the U.S. They use those also to come over illegally and to transport drugs. I heard that on a news program on TV a while ago, so if you think I'm lying then check out yours news before giving me a thumbs down. I have nothing against Mexicans. There is a large population of Mexicans, Cubans and other Latinos here in the apartment complex where I live and many of them are my friends. Good friends! I wouldn't trade them for the world. But I don't condone them coming over illegally either. It is sad that the Mexican government isn't trying to better the economics for their people. If they've actually started something I haven't heard anything about it.

Becoming a foreign exchange student can take some time, especially when it comes to finding the right program that fits your needs and interests. I am a program advisor for AYUSA Global Youth Exchange, and we provide a lot different academic and summer programs for our US and Canadaian and US high school students at a competitive price. Below are some of our requirements to becoming a high school foreign exchange student (other companies have similar requirements): 1) be a high school student 2) 15-18 years old (you absolutely cannot turn 19 while on program in Japan! Japan is really strict) 3) 2.5 GPA (exceptions considered on a case-by-cae basis) 4) 1 year of Japanese 5) Sound and stable mental and physical health 6) Responsible, mature, adaptable, resilient, and excited about cutural exchange! 7) Have parent and school support As you think about studying abroad, make sure you talk to your parents and high school counselor about your plans and how you can fit studying abroad into your high school graduation!

I would be willing to pay for room and board. I am looking to create a kind of foreign exchange student situation for myself. Any ideas on how to approach finding a host family? (I'd prefer to cut out any middle men--a placement agency, etc.--to save money)

I heard about a school down there that will bring you down if you have a 3.5 gpa or above, and offer in-state tuition to an out of state student and has a pharmacy program or something of the likes... What's it called?

I have been asked to submit a proposal for teaching ESL to the parents of the kids that attend a private school in Mexico. Is it appropriate to propose that I get paid according to how many students I have or per class per hour? I am a first time teacher of ESL and not familiar with how this works.

People don't usually base their pay according to number of students unless you're tutoring one-on-one. I got paid $15/hour in the US. Not sure if that's possible in Mexico, but you can always ask for $10-15/hour.

Hi. First it is EFL, not ESL for Mexico. Secondly, are you getting paid by your students or by an institute? If you are getting paid by the students, decide what you want for an hour rate and divide that by the number of students in your class times how many class periods you have. But remember for each 1 hour of class time it usually takes 1 hour of out of class time for prep and admin work associated with the class, so remember that when you are making up your own costs. To this you should add the cost of transportation and materials, I predict 20% of my hourly rate will go into materials. So here is a quick calculation. If you want 20 USD an hour and have 4 students in your class, for 12 sessions and it costs you 2 USD for transport ion each way.: 20 (hourly rate wanted) x 2(for teaching and prep time) + 4 (for materials per class) + 4 (for transportation x 12 (number of sessions) you get 576 USD. Now divide this by 4 (the number of students) and you get 144 USD. Round it up to 149 USD and that is the cost per student for all the classes. http://fundingtravel.com
