do you need a a student visa if you are doing an exchange to mexico for about 5 months?
i am in high school and i am going for about 5 months... i called the mexican consulate and they said it was the schools choice... are you sure you want to do an exchange in mexico? their are allot of kidnapping of u.s. citizens

Jamie has no idea what she's talking about... Watches too much TV... And yes, any long stay requires an FM format from the Foreign Relations Secretariat... Go to a Consulate...

yes anything over 3 mths requires a visa

No you don't; since American citizens are eligible to stay for up to 180 days without a visa you may travel to Mexico for your exchange of 5 months if accepted by a Mexican authority. http://www.inm.gob.mx/EN/index.php?page/not_need_visa . Edit: based on additional details The same applies to Canadians; you should state a different citizenship from start if you ask travel questions in Y!A USA instead of Y!A Canada.
