Is Mexico a dangerous place for college students to go on spring break?

Is Mexico a dangerous place for college students to go on spring break?
Next spring break, a few friends and myself wants to go to Cancun for our spring break. We will all be 20 years old next year. My parents are very concerned about me going alone with just friends. If we plan on just staying in the resort the whole time, should we be fine?

Yes, I'm from there, and I live in the US now, but I visit as often as I can. I live in the city and its fine. I think right now the worst places are the border, like Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, and Mexico city is a little dangerous if your a foreigner. The thing about can cun is that u have to go clubbing! and that obviously involves leaving the resort. But its sooo full of tourists that I really doubt there will be any kind of danger. If you ask any TRUE mexican, Can cun is practically NOT mexico, its a lovely beach with a million tourists thats all. I think you will be absolutely fine, whether you stay in the resort or go out clubbing.

You might be fine, if you stay in the resort. Islands in the Caribbean are nicer than Mexico and have friendlier governments - in case one of you kids gets into trouble. Honestly, why make your parents worry like that?

There is a huge debate of the safety of Mexico but overall, it is safe. Like any city you visit throughout the world, if you keep your street smarts, you will be just fine. Due to the drug violence here, a lot of people think that it is everywhere in Mexico. That is far from the truth. I invite you to read the article I recently wrote regarding safety in Mexico. All conclusions based on studies done by San Diego University. http://ezinearticles.com/?Killing-Mexican-Drug-Violence-Myths&id=4250457 Happy and Safe Travels! Kristin

Stay in the resort destinations and you'll be fine.

Its only dangerous if you have no common sense, basically do not go looking for anything illegal, do not flash wealth, and do not anger the locals.

Generally, students are there for either the semester or the year. You can be a "welcome" family, however, and if you do that, the student would stay with you for a month or so until another family decided to have the exchange student live with them for the remaining time. There shouldn't be a problem with traveling back and forth between parents so long as the school district is the same, but you will have to check with the program to make sure. You get to "choose" the exchange student: it gives you a short biography, their likes and dislikes, and their country. You later get to read a longer letter and see pictures to finalize your choice. Try looking at IES for getting in contact with someone who would be able to help you. ASSE is another choice. They're both reputable and are for high school students. Good luck!

Can an int'l student work off campus in USA ?

Can an int'l student work off campus in USA ?
So I started college in a small town in New Mexico this fall as an int'l student and job opportunities here on campus are extremely limited. I mean I have really tried but cant find a job on campus. So in this case can I seek permission to work off campus ? I really need a job since there is nothing to do here and I want to keep myself busy and earn some money so that I can go home and see my parents over the christmas break.

Generally not unless it's an internship as part of your course of study.

I think if you have a work visa? or just go to a place where you want to apply and ask, they'll probably tell you or maybe even hire you and pay under the table. I live in NM and know a few people who had the same problem.

You can legally work for a total of 12 months as an international student, which can either be while you attend school or after you graduate. Most kids like to use this for serious internships or for getting a foot in the door with an American company after they graduate in hopes the company will sponsor them to stay in the US. You need to apply and register any job and pay a fee when applying. Your school will have details. Otherwise just try Craig's list or local ads for pick up jobs like helping the elderly or babysitting.
