Don't drink the water remember ice is frozen water don't travel alone.El Presidente Brandy is some good stuff also you can get Cuban cigars.
2 :
Dont drink the water or anything with ice cubes or anything washed & not cooked (like salad) or anything sold off the street. I've never gone there without getting sick.
3 :
Well they don't put tissue paper in the toilet and the water is unsafe the streets have gangs they hate Americans the police are as likely to rob you as the citizens and they let flies land on your food because they don't enforce health laws. Good Luck
4 :
Don't drink the water unless it's bottled. Keep your hands in your pockets. Look forward, backward, left and right all the time. If you fail to do this you'll be mugged in no time.
5 :
Always have someone with you, make sure you know the current exchange from dollars to pesos, (probably around 10 pesos for every 1 dollar) so you know exactly what your paying and what you should be getting back and don't do anything you wouldn't do at home. Oher than that, enjoy it.
6 :
Don't drink the water. don't leave the tourist areas... better yet don't Go there... I have been there it sucks.
7 :
omg these people are exaggerating if you go to the rich part of mexico city you'll be fine. Don't drink the water from the faucet. when you go out to the city avoid the metro, put your money in ur socks and put your wallet in your front pocket. Don't worry mexico has its beautiful parts just like the U.S. once you get there you'll see. Enjoy.Take the precautions you would take when traveling in a place you wouldn't go in your hometown...itslike everywhere.
8 :
The first thing is the taxis, don't take the old green vw bug taxis, unless they have the license plate number that starts either with an S for sitio or L for libre, and it has to have the number written on th roof as well, if they don't have any of this, its probably a fake taxi, and will likely rob you, may be on the taxi meter or the kidnap express, they take you to atms and max out credit cards. just don't take those, take the new taxis, a few more pesos. 1 dollar is equal to 11 pesos right now so you get a little more for your dollars but less when you want to change it back to pesos. be sure exactly where you are going so you don't get lost when taking public transportation, there's metro stations all around and have maps just know where you get off at. watch out for pickpockets, don't look like a tourist those are the ones they look for. i don't know where you are staying but tourist areas are somewhat safe, don't look afraid, watch out for traffic, there tends to be a lot of accidents that way. not trying to scare you but mexico city is a tough city but there's always good fun, polanco is a good shopping place, the cuauhtemoc borough is always a good tourist area , lots of history and places to work at. people will offer you to buy stuff, simple no will do and walk away, don't listen to the other guy to keep hands in pockets, sign of insecurity, other than that have fun, you're so lucky, wish i could go back
9 :
in mexico city. NEVER EVER take the subway, NEVER hail a cab (always call for one and get the cab number.) especially if you are in a "rich" area...don't LOOK rich. no name brand of faux brand purses, clothing, or sunglasses. being in a rich area isn't going to keep you safe...if anything, it will put you in more danger for serious crimes...probably help you in cases of petty theft though.
10 :
Wow! ok, don't drink the water from the faucet, but any bottled water you can drink, and it tastes much better than faucet water from the US, water should have not flavor, right? beleive me it does taste better here. If you are in a well stablished restaurant, you can tell, it's easy, don't worry about the ice it will be clean, also vegetables and fruits will be clean, washing them is not enough but in 15 min they are clean with a special disinfectant. I guess you are staying with a family? they will take care of you, we are very carying and loving, they won't leave you on your own. When going out, try to blend in, don't look like a tourist with shorts, a cap and a camera, ok? dress according to the situation. Try to look cool, and safe. Keep your money in the front pocket and stick your hand inside the pocket while walking on the street. You'll be fine and safe. Welcome.
11 :
I always check the Dept. of State web site before traveling to ANY foreign country. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_970.html
12 :
Do your research, join woyn.com and speak to others who have done it, save enough money to survive, always have a calling card or cell phone with you and be a smart traveler. =)
13 :
wow people exaggerate a bit tooo much! mexico city is not that bad (well maybe for a first time visitor it is..but you'll get used to it after a few weeks there) drink bottled water, never take the metro (it will give you a huge headache), if you drive while you are there then you need to be very very aggressive ( never let anyone in to your lane because then 30 cars will go in and all the people behind you will get mad), if you are walking then remember cars are not going to stop for you, the best food is usually from those carts on the street..but if you are not use to this kind of food be aware that you can get sick, go to bullgog cafe..they have amazing concerts there, make some local friends (you'll enjoy mexico city a lot more this way), try not to look like a tourist (blend in as much as you can), dont carry too much cash with you, keep your wallet in your front pocket, visit all the museums and go to events...just enjoy your time there!
14 :
All these tips are very helpful, and yes, many "parts" of Mexico City are pretty bad. Just be cautious, not paranoid, at all times and you should be ok. People like myself, who have family there, are usually safe and ok because they know where NOT to take us, and if they do, they're sure to have us out before it's dark and/or late. Don't be rude or uncorteous to people, but don't think you can trust them; alot of people are out there to make a dime, either the easy or the hard way (hard way meaning by way of force!). And I'm sorry to say that there's not more positive advise, but it's because there is so much corruption there; survival of the fittest, trust no one! =O)
15 :
Hi there, yes Mexico city can be dangerous and in the area you will be staying it can be safe. Please do not bring jewels or expensive things or clothes (branded) unless you use them at your school (no rings, no chains,.. ipods, cameras and cel phones take them under the clothes, portable video games better do not play them in public transportation or street, use your lap on school, museums, cafes or home). Avoid showing your money or you wallet or leaving your bags opened or unatended. Carry them infront of you. Don't drink faucet water or unpacked food at street, wash fruits. Use station taxis that can be called from phone. The green and red ones are dangerous. Carry the embassy phones and all written phones and your blood type in your wallet in case you have an accident. Don't go to discos alone. Change your money at the airport and use traveler checks (no one knows how to use them... only banks.) If you use the metro and it is crowded carry all your stuff at front and hide your wallet. Better if you travel with friends. Most of us are "morenos" and you will probably pop out from the crowd and oftenly people stare so don't get angry ignore them. We are friendly so please do not panic but do not relax or distract because that is the time robbers catch you, we are honest but by minority we have stupid thieves and a stupid police. If you want help on Mexico city I live and work area in the south (by the Universidad street), If you want I can send you my phone if you have troubles or questions here. Return to home before 8:00 p.m.

I am a Mexican student, can I drive my mexican car in the US?

I am a Mexican student, can I drive my mexican car in the US?
I'm an exchange student and live in Mexico (near the border) and I'm wondering if I can take my car into the US for a few months. I have insurance and I'm the owner of the car. I do not want to import it as I will be returning in a few months and it seems pointless to buy a new car if I'm only staying a few months. I will be attending the University of Arizona in Tucson. I don't want to import the car (that means to make it American), I just want to use it for a few months with its mexica license plates. I have US insurance.

I don't know but that would be cool to see a Mexican car aroubd. Maybe you can since I always see cars with European license plates around. What school are you from?
2 :
wen my dad had his car in jamaica and decided to move to the us he had some trouble getting it here but since he worked for customs he got it through. i remember him teling me that he should have had to put it through inspections and maybe pay taxes on it or something so thats wut ik. i dont think its easy to get ur car in but then that was jamaica a couple years ago and the steering wheel was on the left so it might be different. good luck!

http://ask.metafilter.com/42841/Travelling-in-Mexico-by-car Hope this helps, you'll just need valid ID, Social Security Number and Driver's License.
4 :
Yes you can travel in a Mexican Car any where in N. America. I've seen a few in Toronto !
5 :
I'm sure you can, but I don't think your Mexican insurance is valid here. I live in Arizona and my insurance is invalid in Mexico. I see cars with Sonora plates all the time. Please make sure whatever you do, you have valid insurance while in the US.
6 :
You better check with the Arizona DMV to be certain.
7 :
I am a university student at a school in San Antonio, Texas and I have a friend who is from Monterrey. His car has Nuevo Leon plates and he drives it in the states with no problem. As long as you have US insurance and you are a student, then you should be able to just keep your car registered in Mexico. I tried looking at the Arizona Department of Transportation website but they didn't have a specific answer for this. You might want to email the Arizona Department of Transportation to make 100% positive, but you should be fine.

what I need to enter Mexico as a Trinidadian citizen studying in the US?
I am a student studying in the Unites States and a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. I would like to visit Mexico in the next two weeks for vacation for a week and was wondering what I need in terms if requirements for entry to Mexico.I have a valid US student visa (F1), passport issued in Trinidad, I-20 as well. SInce I will be traveling from New York to Mexico, do I go through immigration or not and what will be required of me?If I am to get a visa what do I need to do and more importantly how long does it take for one to obtain a visa to Mexico. If you can get back to me as soon as possible I would greatly appreciate it, since I need to plan my trip. Thanks for a speedy reply!

You probably should go to a Mexican consulate and apply for a tourist visa. If you don't then when you land in Mexico you will have to go through immigration. The people there will issue a tourist visa upon entry maybe, but maybe not and then you will have to turn around and go back. So it is always best to apply for the tourist visa before you leave. That way when you go through immigration, you'll just show them your Trinidad passport and your visa and they'll let you in.

My name is Diana and I'm graduating in a week and I was just wondering if I could finish college over there?? Thanks and please dont say any rude comments...

If you're illegal, why are you still here? You should have been deported. Just know that if you leave, you might not be able to cone back for a while and rightfully so.
2 :
Yes you could
3 :
Of course you can ..I dont know the work situation there but it can be no worse than the US There are some very excellent Unis in Mexico In the US deportation is the only thing to look forward too
4 :
You are a Mexican citizen. Given that your grades will qualify you for college, I don't see why not. The only problem I can foresee is that in order to be admitted to a college in Mexico you would have to present a copy of your high school transcripts and since those would be from the states, you may not be given the same status as a student who has lived and studied in Mexico, in other words, others may have admission priority over you. If you have a college in mind, I would contact them. As far as getting a good job, don't really know what your major would be and what the job market is like in Mexico, or will be like in four years, for your field of education. But if this is your goal then do what you think is best for you; do what you want to do. You are still very young and have plenty of time to chance course if something doesn't initially work out.
5 :
Yes, why wouldn't you? You have received a U.S education, you could go to college anywhere btw...even in the U.S but everything will be at your own cost. I'll admit to you I'm planning on moving there too. Good luck.
6 :
I was in a similar condition. I graduated from middle and high school in the US and even got accepted to the University of Florida engineering school, but then my visa expired and was not renewed. I got deported and I was able to get into college back in my homecountry after translating and authenticating my paperwork in the ministry of education. You country probably has a similar sistem for authenticating school transcripts.
7 :
That would be an excellent idea. If you leave the US before you are 18.5 years old your illegal stay won't be held against you. The government does recognize that as a minor you have to go where your parents go. You only become responsible for staying on illegally in the US when you turn 18. As I guess you know by now.
8 :
yes you could and actually I think you should... as an illegal there are no good options for you here... only picking up crops of washing dishes in a restaurant.. if you have goals in life pursue your dreams, since the dream act hasn't been passed here, you cannot become a resident here, which means even if you go to college you will no be able to get a job here, so just try your luck in your home country.
9 :
How many times are you going to ask this? Get out of this country, you are not welcome here.
10 :
I see you have asked this question before. Your High school transcript of all your studies will be in English. Hope that Mexico colleges can interpret it otherwise you will have difficulty. Good that you will be going home to Mexico. Even if you got into a college in the US, you can't be hired for a job when you graduate college in the US because they don't hire illegals. They do hire LEGAL immigrants only in the US for the GOOD jobs. If you insist on coming back to the US once you leave, please get your proper MEXICAN birth certificate, passport and ID, then apply for a visa to enter the US or else your life will be a struggle and you will always be looking over your shoulder at deportation.
11 :
yes and college is free there
12 :
Yes, as long as you leave before you turn 18 years and 6 months old.
13 :
You wouldn't be able to get a job in the US without a Social Security number. Unless you want to say, "Welcome to .... how can I help you." So you may as well go back to school in Mexico. If you stay in the US after 18 1/2, you will need a waiver to be able to re-enter the U.S. again in the future. If you depart prior to this date, you will no longer be subject to the bar of inadmissibility for acquiring unlawful presence in the U.S.
14 :
Diane-you have posted on here many times .And I have to say I wish someone like you could stay and get a higher education here in the states as it seems like you are a very upstanding person. But your parents did this horrible thing to you by bringing you here illegally. They are the blame for your problem not us Americans.and I sincerely hope that you can go back to Mexico get a great education and apply to come back here the legal way.And this is coming from someone that dislikes any illegal immigrant being here in this country.I would welcome you and would probably give you a job in our business as a legal immigrant.I feel bad for you but Im sorry honey you are illegal right now.Go to Mexico get an good education and come back to America legally, we will welcome you.Good luck
15 :
Yes, you can go to college here. Check with a Mexican consulate there near you and see if they can help you get papers translated, etc. Go ahead and contact Universities here and find out what they want to see. Brush up on your Spanish. The job market isn't great here, and women here are often discriminated against socially, but college-educated women (and men) who speak Spanish and English are usually well paid, unlike the rest of the people here.

Mexico is great, since im half mexican, but I would definetly choose Japan though. Tokyo seems fuckin awesome!
3 :
you should definitely try with China, I am currently in china for an exchange program, and its awesome, and considering the language I think chinese-mandarin is much easier than japanese.
4 :
Well, I'll say Japan because right now Mexico is pretty screwed up
5 :
Not sure what sort of exchange your going on, if it's an AFS-like thing or college. But go for what you like best. Keep in mind factors such as cultural differences (maybe you want something else, or maybe you're afraid that it might be too much), language, quality of education --if that matters. The easiest thing is to browse around on the web, to see what you like best. Maybe something else entirely. i don't know if you have unlimited possibilities, if the exchange will count towards your grades, etc. You'll have to decide. But ultimately, it really is not the place/country that makes the exchange, it's you.

What is the "racial composition" of students in Mexico's universities? I often hear those of predominant?
European ancestry are typically more wealthy and well of than their mixed and indigenous counterparts, so one could assume this status, assuming if it's true, would reflect onto Mexico's universities. So what will we typically find in Mexico's universities? Is their a greater amount of "White" or more European looking Mexicans compared to their respective population? Or are things even amount between the major groups? What about the indigenous population? Thanks.

This is probably the BEST question I have ever seen on Y/A. I wish I were better equipped to answer it...but I will do my best. I am sure it varies greatly in different parts of Mexico. Remember there are larger percentages of Mestizos and Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico than in Mexico City or the northern states. I live in the State of Veracruz, just a few miles from the huge University of Veracruz main campus in the capital city of Xalapa. I know several instructors and professors at the university. This location of the university is the largest of the 6 branches, has over 30,000 students, many from all over the world, and is known as an outstanding university all over the world. There are branches of the university in 5 other cities in the state...4 of them cities with a very small population of wealthier families. These towns are by far mostly populated by Mestizos. The state knocks itself out to make a university education available to ALL people in all locations...as it is very difficult for students to travel far from home to go to university and pay living expenses there. Getting in does not depend on income...it depends solely on academic achievement. I understand why you ask if Mexicans of more European heritage may be more prone to attend university...most likely because they are from families with more money. However, money is not a big issue for university in Mexico. There is no tuition. There are fees for classes... resource fees. materials fees, but usually the total cost is not more than a few hundred dollars ( or less) per semester...and there is aid for that for those who need it. The state seeks indigenous students and has special programs where needed. Mexico really is not nearly as "race conscious" as the U.S. Sure, there is some of that, but in Mexico...people are simply "Mexican." The University here sponsors the Slap Symphony..the best in Mexico and known all over the world. The orchestra is made up of Mexicans of all backgrounds as well as Americans and Europeans. Many also teach at the university. The Music Conservatory has students of all backgrounds. There is also a medical school and a school of dentistry. Through my work , I know many doctors and dentists who work, train, teach, and/or have graduated d here and definitely are NOT primarily of European heritage at all. Because the public schools are poor or absent over the 6th grade in many rural and remote areas, of course many kids from those areas do not attend university. In many places there simply is no school over the 6th grade and families must move for kids to attend school. Many middle and high school kids take public buses anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours each way every day to attend high school. The university system is good...the public school system is very weak in many areas. And of course, there is my "casual observation" of the university students at McDonalds, or in the mall, or walking about the campus definitely not predominently of European heritage....just regular Mexican kids. UNAM is the most prestigious university in Mexico and is in Mexico City. It would be interesting to hear from someone about UNAM. Edit: "Leopold " brought up excellent points. There are many private universities. Many young people who cannot make the academic cut at public universities, or are looking for a certain specialty, attend these and they are expensive...so probably weed out the poorer kids. And, there are many smaller minorities here. In Vearcruz especially, many people are of mixed European, Indigenous and black heritage. There are few black people, but many who are part black ( Yahoo forbids the use of the term that corresponds to Caucasian even tho it is scientifically correct and is used in Mexico). Many people from the Caribbean region and also slaves from the U.S. came here years ago.....just a little side info!
2 :
Well here is the view from another region and I would clarify there you could divide the universities into public and private, northern and southern. To the north of Mexico we have less ethnic groups. On private universities you would see a mixture of your suppose white and mestizo (half indigenous half european). There is indeed a low number of 100% indigenous population because of their rural nature, poor conditions or some other factors. But as the other answer says generally we in Mexico are not as self aware of race. Of course there are some people quite elitist and would seek to avoid people with slight darker skin. People take more into consideration the appearance, base on the clothes you ware and the taste you have. Also the money you have is taken to consideration. Also you are forgetting the people from African or Asian decent I personally had classmates from Japanese and Chinese descent. Who consider themselves as Mexican, not Mexican-chines or Mexican-Japanese as it would happen in the US

Does anyone know where to get micro braids done in Mexico?
I'm going to be a foreign exchange student in Mexico. I am African American and I'm doing my hair in micros after 5 months I need to get my hair re done. Any one know where I can get a weave done???

The best thing you should do is wait unless you come across a professional. Cause most of the foreigner(only the ones that are tourist scammer) just want to make a quick buck and your hair WILL fall out in a week. The best thing is to go on the internet and find someone with exp. in Mexico or any other country. Or wait till you go home.
2 :
just ask people at your school or your neibor hood if you see some one with braids
3 :
If there is any African population in your school (and I'm pretty sure there will be) someone in that group will already know who can get that done: whether it's a student or some location in the town.

u cud try for college but not high school
4 :
To get an F-1 student visa, you must first be accepted by a school in the US. If it is a public school, you must pay full tuition even if you live with US citizen relatives and you can attend for only one year. If it is a private school, you still pay tuition, but you can attend until you finish high school. To be approved for a student visa, you must show two important things: first, that you have enough money to study and live in the US; and second, that you will return to Mexico when you finish your studies and not try to immigrate illegally. Your school records will show that you used to live in the US. If your family was here legally, you have a good chance of being approved for a student visa if you meet other requirements. If your family was in the US illegally, your chances are low because it will be assumed that you are using a student visa as a means to re-enter the US to live. Remember that a student visa is a temporary, nonimmigrant visa. Although some people use student visas as a means to immigrate, that is against the purpose of the visa and the consular officer will deny a student visa if immigration intent is suspected.
5 :
To study in the USA you need a minimum of USD $30,000 a year to finance tuition, food and board. There are almost NO scholarships for international students. You can not get a student visa unless you have the money available in your bank account. In your case you might have relatives here who can provide a place for you to live. They must be US citizens or legal permanent residents. This will help you if you do not have the $30, 000 in your bank account. However, stating that you have relatives here can be a disadvantage. The US embassy might see that as a reason to deny your visa. It could indicate that you have the intention to immigrate permanently to the US. Another option is to apply for a student visa to a community college which is cheaper than a 4 year university. You need an F-1 student visa to study as a university student. Getting admitted into college is pretty easy. Choose one of the "100 best public universities." Public means state or government. Private colleges like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are too expensive and too competitive. You will need to write SAT and TOEFL prior to admission.

What do you think Latino and conservative groups clash over student's "Mexico" t-shirt?

What do you think Latino and conservative groups clash over student's "Mexico" t-shirt?
BIG BEAR LAKE - A "Mexico" t-shirt worn to support the county's World Cup soccer team has created a full-blown controversy in the Bear Valley Unified School District. The mother of the girl who wore the shirt to Big Bear Middle School on June 11 alleges her seventh-grade daughter's teacher took offense to the shirt and accused her of being an illegal immigrant in front of the class. Diana Aviles says she and her daughter are U.S. citizens. The teacher later apologized. The incident has erupted into a battle between anti-illegal immigration activists and Latino groups who say the teacher's alleged behavior is an example of racism and racial profiling. At the district's Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday, members of the conservative activist's group We The People were expected to speak during public comment. The group opposes illegal immigration and employers who hire and exploit illegal aliens, according to a statement on its Web site. Ray Herrera, the group's founder, president and spokesman, says he believes Aviles is an illegal immigrant granted amnesty. He says she's trying to push a "Mexican agenda" on Americans. She allowed her daughter to attend school with the shirt and owns a Mexican restaurant in Big Bear City that displays a Mexican flag, which Herrera describes as "antagonistic." Aviles said it's not outrageous to have a Mexican flag in a Mexican restaurant. The flag has been taken down because of harassment, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- she said. When the Mexican flag was up, she said the American flag was larger and displayed higher. "I'm not pushing anything political," Aviles said. "I had a small Mexican flag and a huge American flag, only for the reason that I'm a Mexican-American restaurant. I don't like people to say I'm not American. This is my country." Herrera said Latino groups such as The League of United Latin American Citizens have publicly called the incident an example of racial profiling so it can be cited during it's fight against Arizona's SB 1070 law, which requires police in the state to check the immigration status of people they suspect are illegal immigrants. "They've been campaigning throughout the county on behalf of illegal immigrants," Herrera said. "This is just a case where they think they've found another poster child - another racial profiling story." Leroy Martinez, vice president of LULAC Council 3163, said he decided to attend the meeting after he heard the group planned to speak. "If (Herrera) wants to turn this into an immigration issue that's his problem," Martinez said. "The reality is you have an American student who was profiled." A statement from the district says it's investigating allegations from a student that a teacher made racist remarks against her during a class. The statement then says the district will not comment on the findings of the investigation until it's completed. Aviles says the teacher should be fired. She wants her daughter to be moved to another class if the teacher remains at the school. "I'm angry," Aviles said. "Why should it be turned into a political thing when this is about a child who is being ridiculed? That teacher showed hatred in the class." The teacher's apology is enough and the investigation should be dropped so the matter doesn't distract students, Herrera said. http://www.redlandsdailyfacts.com/sanbernardinocounty/ci_15461281

People are on edge regarding this topic and the teacher grossly misstepped in the wake of the kids in cali being forced to remove their american flag t-shirts. This was in california right? ESPECIALLY in border states, people are immigration crazy ( i live in phx, i know) Citizens are mad and feel betrayed and its not hard to set people on both sides off right now. I like this aviles lady though. I dont know if the teacher should be fired, if so all the teachers in tucson teaching kids whitey is the devil and holding them down should be let go too. I dont know. Hererra sounds like a jack*ss though. Mexican flags in mexican restaurants antagonistic? Thats like expecting chinese restaurants to take down the dragons.
2 :
it happened in CA and thus has nothing to do with AZ's new law the teacher was way out of bounds, but that doesn't change the fact that illegal aliens are here illegally
3 :
If she is not pushing anything agenda wise - then why is she complaining? If she is such a U.S. citizen, why fly a foreign flag over your business at all? Why not just the U.S. flag? She and her daughter already got an apology. For most people that is enough. So who is being unreasonable and showing racist hatred now? Hint: It isn't the teacher.

Should the student who lowered and tore up the Mexican flag at UNM be prosecuted?

Should the student who lowered and tore up the Mexican flag at UNM be prosecuted?
Peter Lynch never imagined that pulling a Mexican flag from a university flagpole and ripping it apart would thrust him into the center of a nationwide argument. Lynch, a University of New Mexico student and Air Force veteran, said he was angry on Sept. 17 when he saw the Mexican flag flying without the United States flag, a violation of flag etiquette. "I was livid with the situation, and it wasn't the fact that it was the Mexican flag," said Lynch, 30. "It was the fact that it was any foreign banner." UNM police charged Lynch with misdemeanor criminal damage to property. Lynch and the university concede that the incident resulted from miscommunication— someone simply failed to take down the Mexican flag when the U.S. flag was lowered. But it obviously touched a nerve, sparking strong reaction from both sides.Belshaw: Apology Should Be the End of Flag Flap Email comments Local talk show lines were flooded with calls, blogs were abuzz, letters and e-mails poured into the Journal and hundreds of motorcyclists are making plans to rally on Oct. 7, the day of UNM President David Schmidly's inauguration. Was it an act of patriotism or an act of hate? â€Å“But why should any forgeign flag fly at a U.S. University for any reason?”Indeed that is the question.Unless this is Mexico why would we be celebrating Mexican Independence Day?

No the Mexican flag bears no weight here! If they want to fly a mexican flag let them go to mexico. And what about the criminals who flew a foreign flag on university property? Are they in jail or being deported?
2 :
No Foreign flag should be flown without the American Flag flying. I applaud his stance.
3 :
He should be held in the highest esteem in my opinion. Good for him. A true American patriot.
4 :
He should be punished. He should have filed a complaint with the university, not destroyed university property. I don't think there's a need to make this a criminal case. I don't think it's either an act of patriotism or of hate. To those making connections with flag burning - if he had torn up a Mexican flag he bought with his own money, I wouldn't believe he should face any punishment. It's the destruction of someone else's property that I have a problem with here.
5 :
He was right to be angry that the Mexican flag was flying there. And I agree that there's really no reason for the Mexican flag to be flying in the US at all, let alone at a publicly funded institution. However, regardless of his reasons, what he did was vandalism and wrong. He should have gone through the proper channels to rectify the situation. Or at the very least he could have removed the Mexican flag without destroying it.
6 :
No he's only doing what the politicians aren't
7 :
no he should not be in trouble. he was being patriotic. and we should not be flying any flag on our USA soil. i'm going to email them right now and let them know they are a disgrace to this country for arresting him.
8 :
Instead of tearing it up, he should have burned it. The fact that somebody "forgot" to take it down is questionable in my mind. The parade for the Whole Enchilada Fiesta here in Las Cruces this past weekend had people marching with Mexican flags, and were there any American flags in these people's hands as well? No. Arrogance runs rampant with those people, and they certainly have no respect whatsoever for our flag, even though they seek to come here to take advantage of what our flag stands for. He should have burned the damn thing.
9 :
No, he shouldn't. It is not our country's flag.
10 :
This was an act of patriotism. That soldier fought for his country, risking his life. He had every right to do what he did. We are in America and have every right to be proud of our country.
11 :
I can't see what a foreign flag is doing flying on the property of an American university? If he apologized for tearing up someone else's property that was enough. No one seems to get up in arms when demonstrators tear up an American flag- why should anyone give a rat's hiney about Mexico's?
12 :
Prosecute him for what? If he can burn the American flag, he can tear up the Mexican flag. It's called free speech. However, since he did destroy someone else's property, he should have to pay for it.
13 :
why should he be prosecuted? If it was an american flag that he defaced he would be looked at as a hero, a freedom fighter, and other amazing things. If he would be treated that way about our flag, why should he get in trouble for another countries flag. Even though we may not always like it, our country is free and we give people the right to burn our flag, so why not other flags flying in our country?
14 :
No he shouldn't be prosecuted, he should be given a medal of honor. I would have burned it, stomped it into the ground, and took a dump on it. Oh, that wasn't politically correct was it?
15 :
I think the student handled it the wrong way, but he shouldn't be prosecuted. Instead of ripping it down (which I would be tempted to do, too), he should have immediately contacted someone at the University and requested that it immediately be remedied. I cannot understand how it was a "miscommunication". Anyone who is in a position of being a flag bearer should be adequately trained on protocol and flag regulations, and I hope the University takes necessary measures to ensure that this never happens again. I also think that whomever made the "mistake" should make a public apology.
16 :
I think he's retarded and should be slapped. He obviously hates Mexicans. Who cares what flag was up there!!!
17 :
Firstly, if they failed to take down the mexican flag after they took down the American Flag, doesn't that mean the mexican flag was flying above Our Flag. This goes to show that any non American can come into our country, burn our flag, march against America, and any other anti-American thing they want to do, and they are protected under the constitution, while an American citizen, defending his/her country from acts like this one, gets punished. Why can't our constitution protect its citizens vs. protecting people on American soil. If mexico, puerto rico, canada, france, any other country is better than ours, move back. You don't have to be here, but this is America and if people want to live here, they should speak our language, fly our flag, and respect our laws. Mark my word, someday in the the future of our lifetimes, we will have another war in our country, but it won't be against Al-queda or any other Muslim group, it will be against those that do not belong here, to finally get them out and to stop ruining our country.
18 :
The University is at fault. Anybody charging them with treason? Why not?
19 :
He should be charged with destruction of personal property. I don't care what it is - or why he ruined it- YOU DON'T have the right to take - or break- other people's things. This is something I am trying to teach my toddlers. I would hope by the time they are adults they would understand this very basic statement. * I do agree that the flag should not be being flown- especially without the US flag*
20 :
No, he should not be prosecuted, even though he technically did destroy someone else's property. However, the University should face stiff financial penalties for ignoring the rules regarding the flying of national flags. The Mexican national flag has meaning here only on the grounds of Mexican embassies/consulates and on the grounds of the United Nations. Outside those areas it is just a piece of cloth like my shirt.
21 :
We as Veterans watched in Horror as demonstrators Tore, riped and Burned our flag That we all fought, bled and died for.The vary thing that we swore to protect lay burning in the street. The same Constitution that we fought for said they had the right to burn our flag under freedom of speech.Does it piss me off hell yes! is there any thing we can do any thing about it NO!
22 :
The proper response would be to call attention to it. This person robbed himself of his own moral power by giving the university police the luxery of thinking about his conduct and wrong doing. To win a battle like this you must keep the burden of immorality upon the institution or individual who wrongfully flew the Mexican flag over American soil. In other words never give your opponent the luxery of thinking about your behavior when they have done wrong and know it. I would have called the president's office and announced that I was calling the local news station over their error and that they better get the flag down fast as this is not Mexican territory. I would then use my cell phone to get a picture of it before they could hide their error, in order to file a complaint with the State of New Mexico.
23 :
No foreign flag should fly at a US government facility, as a state funded university is, that is for sure, except possibly lower than the US flag if welcoming a foreign dignitary. Which doesn't make vandalism ok.
24 :
No.
25 :
As a UNM alumni and a New Mexico native here my take.. (1) Who is teaching the ROTC unit on proper flag protocol??? It is my understanding that they took down the US flag and ran the Mexican flag back up. This would have been a golden opportunity for someone at ROTC to explain proper US flag protocol. (2) Where were the Mexican through all this? They ran their flag up and hit the road. If you are going to engage in flag raising in this country, there are long standing protocols, learn and following them. (3) Where were the Latino UNM Administration members when action could have been taken to correct the situation?Sitting on their thumbs as the historically have done? Would they be rushing to apologise to our US veterans if it had been the US flag and Mexican students? Don't kid yourself. (4) Does Mr. Lynch have the right to vent some anger after dealing the the 3 groups above who refused to follow proper flag protocols? Sure he does. Should he have torn up the flag, probably not but he has said that already. (5) Would this have happened at a Mexican university on the 4th of July? NO, they would have shot the American students for trying to raise a US flag.

No you don't; since American citizens are eligible to stay for up to 180 days without a visa you may travel to Mexico for your exchange of 5 months if accepted by a Mexican authority. http://www.inm.gob.mx/EN/index.php?page/not_need_visa . Edit: based on additional details The same applies to Canadians; you should state a different citizenship from start if you ask travel questions in Y!A USA instead of Y!A Canada.

My girlfriend is trying to get a student visa but was rejected and now is stuck, how can she get back home?
My girlfriend was going to go to a university in the states. She got accepted into the university but went down to Mexico to get her student visa and they rejected her. They said that she has to wait 2 years before she can try again. Now she is stuck in Mexico. Is there any way that she can appeal it or is there another option?? And no, we are not in the postion to get married.
Immigration - 3 Answers

There's no appeal. The US Consular Officer has wide latitude when it comes to these things. Why can't she apply for 2 years? That makes no sense unless there was some other underlaying problem such as illegally living in the United States.
2 :
If I'm reading between the lines correctly, your girlfriend was living in the states w/o a visa, returned to her native Mexico to get one and was refused. Obviously someone suspected that she was trying to immigrate (or trying to reenter legally) and put a hold on her visa. Graduating from a US high school may have been a red flag (I'm just guessing here). Any additional tries at visas will probably set off more alarms and result in an even longer waiting period. Her best bet would be to apply at a college in Mexico and try to transfer in two years.
3 :
Well, there's no visa ineligibility that expires after 2 years. It sounds like she was here illegally to begin with, however, that would mean either a 3 or 10 year period of ineligiblity, not 2. If she was simply rejected for a student visa, because for some reason they considered her an intending immigrant, under 214b, she could reapply tomorrow, even though she'd probably get the same answer. It seems you're only getting part of the answer here.

Go to San Diego. Take the trolley/cab to the border. Then take a Mexican taxi to the airport in Tijuana. Rent a car there with total insurance. You can drive to Cabo, or find little hideaway resorts on the way that only the locals know about. You will be driving a Mexican car with Mexican plates and insurance. Nobody will spot you as tourists and if anything happens to the car, call the number and they will send you a new one- no worries. Scan the area with Google Earth for ideas on where to go. That is a very inexpensive way to travel in Mexico.

Best place to stay in Mexico for a college student?

Best place to stay in Mexico for a college student?
I've been to Mexico 8 times; 7 in Playa Del Carmen, and once in Cabo San Lucas. All 8 times, I've gone with the family in 5 star all inclusive resorts. I like the weather and the atmosphere of Mexico, but am also considering Cuba. Is cuba nice or cheaper? What is the best place(city/town & resort) for a college student and her boyfriend to go? We're not exactly rich obviously.. so 5 star isn't really an option for us, but we def. want all inclusive. I know American's can't go there, I'm not American though. The University of Nevada participates in the federal student loan program. These loans require no credit check, no cosigner, and have pretty good interest rates and repayment terms. You apply for these loans by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is available on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

What do you think American tax money is funding the education of kids who actually live IN Mexico ?

What do you think American tax money is funding the education of kids who actually live IN Mexico ?
At the beginning of September, Channel 5 News revealed a shocking story in Roma, Texas. As their cameras chronicled, each morning dozens of Mexican kids are crossing the border from Mexico into the Texas border town of Roma to attend an American school, free of charge. You read that correctly. American tax money is funding the education of kids who actually live IN Mexico and who are illegally crossing the border every single day to attend U.S. schools. I have waited a suitable period of time to bring this story up, hoping that the national news sources will pick up on this absurd violation of our National sovereignty and misuse of our tax money... yet not a peep has been heard to my knowledge. It is estimated that $4 million has been spent on Mexican kids just in Roma, Texas, alone.News Channel 5 reported on the 6th of September that these Mexican kids are getting a free education from US taxpayers because the county schools do not have very stringent residency requirements. (See video here) Even more ridiculously, school administrators report that they aren't even allowed to ask if a student is a U.S. citizen before admitting them to class. The report also reveals that no one in the school system is even bothering to keep track of how many schools are giving a free education to children whose parents are not U.S. taxpayers. Here is the full Channel 5 report: Taxpayer Money Used to Educate Mexican Nationals -- Over four million spent in Roma alone ROMA - An estimated 650 kids from Mexico are going to public school in Roma. They come to America for a better education. The annual cost of an education is nearly $7,000 a student, which works out to $4,500,000 spent on Mexican students of your tax dollars spent. That's in Roma alone. The truth is, no one knows the actual money being spent, because no one is actually keeping track. The reason? Parents only have to prove U.S. residency once. After that, the student is set until they graduate. Proving residency is as simple as providing a Roma address. School administrators say they can't ask if a student is a legal U.S. citizen. Administrators say American students don't "do without" because of students from Mexico. They tell us the district gets state and federal funding for every student, even those from across the border. Is this not outrageous? I certainly find it so. Then, why have the national news services all ignored this story? http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2007/09/20/mexican-kids-daily-cross-texas-border-free-u-s-paid-education

you are so pathetic, so you're saying that the children cross the border every single day illegally??? you don't even know what you're talking about!??? then let's make a report on the many international students that come here "illegally" to go to college! and yeah they don't pay taxes either... lol

A student visa for what country, the US? And you're 15? Where are your parents? Student Visas as far as I know are for college.
3 :
first, you can only attend a public high school for one year on a student visa. and that school would have to be willing to accept you, issue you an I-20 student form and register you in the SEVIS database before you could even apply for the visa. plus, you'd have to pay tuition to attend. you can attend a private school for your entire high school time, but again you'd need the student form etc to apply for the visa. many public schools don't feel like doing all the paperwork involved, so you need to talk to them first before doing anything else.

University of Texas at Brownsville spokeswoman Amy Lynch said 19-year-old freshman Jonathan William Torres was killed Wednesday in Matamoros. Lynch tells The Brownsville Herald that the university was trying to get more information from the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros, across the U.S.-Mexico border from Brownsville. Officials say it is unknown whether the death was connected to ongoing drug war violence in Mexico. http://www.statesman.com/news/texas/officials-texas-college-student-killed-in-mexico-957170.html Another case will Mexico pay this family money ? If you are coming to San Diego, in don have much time, you can drive or even take the trolley to the border and cross to Tijuana. There its true that in some places theres its crime, but it is like in every big city of the world, if you stay in the tourist places or plazas, you should not have any problems, if you like shopping you can go to the revolution ave, or Mercado de artesanias in downtown Tijuana, you can find a lot of Mexican Art crafts, also you can always ask for a lower price and a better deal, downtown Tijuana its at 3 minutes from the border, you can take a take will charge you about 3 USD, also there are plenty of restaurants at a very reasonable price. If you like to go were the local people go, you can go to Plaza Rio, also very close to the border, in that plaza all the prices are tag and final, there are Clothes, shoes, Jewelry, perfumes, etc... and then If you like something more cultural, threes the CECUT, ( Centro Cultural Tijuana ) has a big museum and several paint and sculptures expositions. This its just in Tijuana, if you are coming just for 3 day, w/ this its pleanty enough. Also yo can go south of Tijuana To Rosarito ( 20 minutes from Tijuana) La Ruta del Vino ( Wine Route, its between ensenada and Tecata, like 1.5 Hrs from Tijuana, or Ensenada 1 hour from Tijuana. You can spend one day at each location.

The Tlatelolco Massacre, also known as The Night of Tlatelolco (from a book title by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska), took place on the afternoon and night of October 2, 1968, in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco section of Mexico City, ten days before the 1968 Summer Olympics celebrations in Mexico City, when police and military shot student demonstrators. The death toll remains controversial: some estimates place the number of deaths in the thousands, but most sources report between 200 and 300 deaths. The exact number of people who were arrested is also controversial. Rojo amanecer (1989), directed by Jorge Fons, is a Spanish-language film about the event. It focuses on the day of a middle-class family living in one of the apartment buildings surrounding the Plaza de Tlatelolco and is based on testimonials from witnesses and victims. It starred Héctor Bonilla, María Rojo, the Bichir Brothers, Eduardo Palomo and others. A new film, Tlatelolco: Mexico 68, currently in production, is due out in 2009. This version focuses on an American journalist in Mexico for the Olympics who gets caught up in the events of October 2, 1968. Richard Dindo, a documentary film maker, has made Ni olvido, ni perdón (2004) which includes contemporary interviews with witnesses and participants as well as footage from the time.

Should 22 college students recently returning from Mexico be allowed to graduate with the rest of their class?

Should 22 college students recently returning from Mexico be allowed to graduate with the rest of their class?
At Slippery Rock University their will be a separate graduation ceremony for 22 students who went to Mexico for student teaching. Should these students be separated from their peers even though they show no signs of being sick? http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/health/19328897/detail.html#COMMENTTOP

Of course they should be allowed to. However, if they are experiencing flu symptoms they should not attend. The students should be allowed to graduate, but be monitored.
2 :
Absolutely, unless they are infected. This whole thing is overblown.
3 :
How ridiculous....daily I am amazed at how reactionary and silly people can be....If you really want to stay safe...Walk everywhere...Car accidents kill 1.2 million EVERY YEAR.....
4 :
No they shouldn't. That's being paranod on the part of the University and so unfair to the students. It's already starting to spread from state to state and at this point, even though it originated in Mexico, Mexico is now out of the picture now. It's every counties problem now, even in Europe. If the college students start getting sick, they should be tested and treated. Those with no symptoms just be left alone and allowed to live life as they naturally would.

Both my nephew and niece were in Mexico on Spanish language exchange programs but just for the summer. Yes they got credit. You didn't mention your Spanish skills but most decent language programs should know about exchange programs
2 :
The ITESM (Tec de Monterrey) has a "prepa internacional" (international high school)... certain campuses only, but worth looking into. Also, there are many language schools throughout Mexico, expecially in Cuernavaca. You didn't say how your Spanish is... if you're fluent you could probably go to a regular high school there (I'm not 100% sure but you should look into it). If you haven't learned Spanish, then going to an immersion school over the summer or holidays is a great idea. I would contact the school in Mexico or Spain directly, as well as speak to y our guidance counselor. Good luck! I hope this helps. I wish I had studied abroad when I was in high school. I finally got the chance in college and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

First off, you don't get to choose where you go... they pick for you. Second off, 4 weeks is just not enough to learn Spanish or to get a real taste of the culture and enjoy it. I would recommend a year program and don't worry, it may seem expensive but if you get a job you can save up for it in no time. As for Mexico or Spain.... I would goto Spain. I have been to Mexico and it is not the best place to live in and it is hot. Spain is a better place to live.

There is not just ONE school schedule in Mexico. In different cities the schedule can be different. Even in one town there are many different schedules I live in a town of 80,000 and 1/2 hr from the state capital with 3/4 million people. There are dozens of public and private schools. There are many different schedules. In public school, kids only go 1/2 day through 5th grade. Usually there is a morning session from 8 to noon. Then there is an afternoon session for a different group of kids from 2 to 5:30 or 6. Kids in elementary school do not have a lunch break, just recess. Secondary is like middle school and the kids go for about 5 hous...can be 8 to 1 or 9 to 2. Prepatoria is high school. There are many schedules. In the public school, some kids go 7 to 1:30, other kids go 2 to 9 in the evening. Evening school is not unusual at all. Kids in secondaria and prepatoria have a break at about 9:30 or 10 for breakfast. I know that sounds strangs, but in Mexico, people just have coffee or juice and a sweetbread when they get up early. A traditional breakfast is eaten between 9 and 11 in the morning. Then they do not have unch til 2 or 3 , and the kids are home from school then. Private schools can have different schedules. Some have a program where kids go only on Saturday and do work on their own during the week. This is for high school kids who need to work. Another thing, I have never seen an elementary kid walk to school without an adult. A parent or grandparent or aunt or neighbor ALWAYS walks kids to school til they are about 11...kids never walk alone.
