I am an international student wanting to buy a motorcycle. Can I use my foreign Driver's License?
I will be studying in Texas for the next 2 years. I am interested in purchasing a motorcycle. I know you need an M drivers license. I have a regular drivers license from Mexico. Can I register the bike under my name with this license? I'm unable to get a Texas DL since I'm an international student and you need a SSN for a license here.

Call or web onto the Dept. of Public Safety and ask them. Do you need a motorcycle license in Mexico? And your County Tax Assessor for purchasing and registration info.
2 :
You may need an Intrenational Driver's License if you're not going to become a citizen and/or resident. It may also be you just need totake a written test. Contact the Texas BMV to find out.

Do not dare put this on a credit card if you can save 1200 and pay cash for the trip then go for it my only advise is a vacation is never worth going in debt because the payments follow you home.

Is it possible to fly to mexico with an expired passport, if i have a current passport not in my possession?

Is it possible to fly to mexico with an expired passport, if i have a current passport not in my possession?
I'm applying for a student visa for Spain and they take your current passport for over a month. During this time I'm flying to mexico with my family for vacation (a week). Would they actually hold me at the airport and not let me back? I have a drivers license, birth certificate and my old passport.
Other - Mexico - 3 Answers

1 :
A valid, unexpired passport is required for travel to Mexico via air. The airline flying you there would most likely deny you boarding absent the valid passport, as they have a duty to ensure that all travelers have the proper documentation even before boarding an aircraft.
2 :
You cannot fly without a current passport I would call the passport agency and explain what is happening with your student visa and ask them what your options are. This is and odd situation. Perhaps the student visa people can take your expired one? I don't think they would hold you at the airport cause I don't think you'd get out getting into Mexico is easy it's getting back in that's tough.
3 :
You absolutely must have your passport in hand. You will not be able to enter or leave Mexico without it. My advise is to get another passport for Mexico.

How safe is it to take a summer-long solo road trip around Mexico?

How safe is it to take a summer-long solo road trip around Mexico?
I'm an American male grad student in my mid-20s, and I'm taking the upcoming summer off. I want to take a long solo trip, and Mexico seems interesting. However, lately I've heard so much about the drug violence there, as well as police corruption and other issues. How big of a concern is this for a solo traveler? How does the safety of traveling in Mexico compare to a similar road trip around the U.S.? I appreciate any information at all. Thanks!

NOT WITH AMERICAN PLATES. you'll get pulled over and ticketed for speeding even if you've got cruise control set at the speed limit and then they'll find something else wrong with your car to add to the offenses. the only way out of it is paying off the cop or going with him to the station very very corrupt road police. if you want to do it, buy a car in Mexico with Mexican plates and go from there. so long as you aren't an obvious tourist, you'll be fine. it's the people who attract attention to themselves (even something as small as talking about your solo trip to the bartender at a small bar) who can run into trouble like getting mugged.

The crime is really much worse than publicized, so be warned.

I totally disagree with the answers you got. i am a single American woman living in Mexico and know many others . There are over one million Americans and Canadians living in Mexico...and we are perfectly safe. I am always safe...have no troubles at all whether driving or traveling by bus. There is an immense amount of distorted and misinformation out there about violence in Mexico. Often , it is given by people who have not actually been here. Another person on Answers gave a fantastic article to read about this. See the link below and read that article. It will shed a completely different lite on things. The only time I ever got stopped by a policeman for having American plates , was because he wanted to practice his English with me! There are MANY cars here with American plates...no big deal. See 2nd site for other info you need. You will also need a Mexican road atlas, the Guia Roji...see 3rd site. You may find some poor roads, have car trouble, get lost once in a while..."normal" adventures in Mexico...these things happen to me at times...I don't get bent about it. People are always so willing to help...I have no fear of anyone. and, by the way, Mexican mechanics can fix ANYTHING. I have met so many wonderful people here. I have friends who have had similar experiences. Email me any time , if you like.
5 :
I've been living in Mexico for the past year and traveling to most regions of the country and can tell you that it is safe as long as you follow a few common sense rules: don't buy, sell or carry drugs; don't look like you have money (IPod, laptop computer, cameras, even cel phones, Blackberries, etc.); and don't walk around city streets in the middle of the night or drive on highways at night. It is true that most of the violence and crime is between narcos but there have been some incidences, although rare, where innocent bystanders got caught in the crossfire. Ex-pats and tourists seem to feel pretty safe here especially around Guanajuato, Colima, Yucatan Peninsula and Veracruz/Xalapa where I've traveled and/or lived in the last eight months. We've had to pay morditas (bribes, literaly small bites) to police twice in Mexico. The first time was three years ago in Baja California, we were driving a car with California plates and our Spanish wasn't very good. The last time was just last week in Mexico City driving a Mexican car with Mexican plates. The police obviously saw that we were gringos. Thankfully, my Spanish is much improved and I argued with the cop to cut the mordida in half and he agreed. As for how it compares to similar road trips around the U.S., it is much cheaper to travel here as food, accommodations and gas are less expensive. Just don't drive at night, keep your nose clean and learn some Spanish. Have fun!
6 :
Two good from Charlie and travelwriter. I concur with them. I've driven through 18 of the 31 Mexican states and my only problems were a scratched fender in a hotel parking lot in Coatzacoalcos and a stolen baseball cap when I didn't make sure that ALL the doors were locked. So learn from my experience--hide everything in the trunk. I've never had my pocket picked, but I always wore a money belt under my clothes to contain my passport, tourist card, credit/ATM cards and 90 percent of the money. Then if I had lost my wallet, I would have only lost ten percent of my money. I think you would enjoy the experience more if you could find a kindred spirit to share it with. Why don't you try posting a flyer on a school bulletin board or a ad on craigslist to see if there's somebody out there who wouldn't mind being with you in a car for three months. You don't say anything about your knowledge of Spanish. The minimal you can get by with is the ability to get a room for the night, order a meal and ask directions and understand the answer. That's all I had on my first trip to Mexico. If you don't have that, invest in a phrasebook. Get a Mexico Guide book and start hi-lighting things and dog-earring pages of things you want to see. Then post a blog of you're experience when you get back.
7 :
i wouldn't go by myself if i was you because when you are already in mexico, there are a lot of road checks(i don't know what to call them) if the military people, who do these checks on the roads see you are alone they might search you more, which could be such a hassle. also don't take libre.. it's the way that's free. when you take the other road/freeway or whatever you want to call it, you do have to pay at every caseta, which is when you cross into another city. this can be costly, but it's so much safer. also there are bathrooms & highway patrol at the casetas. its very safe this way. ive been on libre before, and the road is bad! the one that you pay for though is great, my tire was flat one time and the patrol came so fast.

I took a month long trip last october (2008) through mexico. I flew into Guad and traveled between there and acapulco, mostly hitchhiking and taking the public busses. I mainly traveled solo, carying backpack and surfboards. I NOT ONCE had a problem. Im almost 30 and have been doing these trips since I was 18. My spanish sucks, but I caried a phrase book and the locals were always helpful and nice. PS. I camped for a month in Michoacan, supposedly the most dangerous state in mexico from all the drug cartels. Yeah I heard stories about heads rolling in a nightclub in Lazaro Cardenes and my friend from Morelia about drug cartels' gun battles in broad daylight. Thing is, if you keep to yourself and dont be flashy, you'll be just fine. PSS, becareful in the borders, thats where they get you. All of my trips, no problems anywhere except for the border zone (only in the last few years) though. Dont drive at night, we did and it was scary! Roads seem to end out of nowhere and it'll be on the map. Watch Out! About the roads I just read the above answer: the libre is fine, but the quotas are the way to go. They're expensive, 5-20 USD each, but if you have car troubles the "green angles" will come to the rescue and fix your car, give you gas, etc. Quota will take you 3 hours where a Libre will take you 5-6 hours, just an example. OH- drive through Mex 200 on the pacific coast through Michoacan, its beautiful, reminds me of Hwy 1 up here in Nor Cal.

Can an international student become a US resident?

Can an international student become a US resident?
I finished my undergraduate studies at University of New Mexico and will start grad school in the fall.I have been here for five years and I am wondering if I could apply for residency? I am on a student visa. Also, can I get a credit card from a bank? Which bank?
Immigration - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
these days it seems that you have a better chance of gaining employment, if you aren't a citizen. just apply for a job you want, and let them sponsor you for a work visa.
2 :
If you want to apply for residency, you will need a sponsor. If your school or an employer is willing to do it, then you can apply. Otherwise, wait until you are done with grad school and apply for H-1B visa then. Most banks will give you a credit card. You need to show a driver's license or state ID card (which you can get without being a resident, as long as you are here legally).
3 :
If you apply now, while you are legally in the country it will be a much easier process. You will need someone willing to sponsor you or a job to sponsor you. Alot of international students in my college had credit cards. Just check with the first one that comes by the college.
4 :
I am sorry I can't help you with your question. I just want to tell you I think it is great you are here on a legal visa and trying to get legal residency. I don't care where you are from or your race, you are the kind of immigrant this country needs and I hope everything works out right for you. Good luck.
5 :
Assuming you have been perfectly LEGAL and maintaining your status and has been involved with no crime, then the following applies to you: 1. most students will try to get US employeers who are willing to sponsor them for work visa (or H1-B). This H1-b last for 3 years. It can be renewed 2 times only. After that the person needs to leave the country for 1 year. 2. During the 6 year duration of H1-B, there is a possibility for employee to request employment based green card sponsorship from the employeer. This takes few years. 3. You can also try the green card lottery (DV lottery). It is free, but the change is very small. 4. You can also marry US citizen. Of course there will be some checking/interviews to assure you dont do any marriage fraud. For credit card, the easiest one is try with the bank you are doing business with. From there, you build up your credit history and later you'd be able to apply credit card from others.

It is not that we have different crafts, but we use different designs. I would start with scrapbooking, she can record her experiences as well as be creative. Embroidery, beadwork, jewelry making, art dolls, yarn crafts like knitting and crochet, all are fun, and you can put an american spin on them with colors and history. What about going to a Paint Your own Pottery place, a fun afternoon and you will have a great memento at the end of it.
2 :
I believe quilting is about as American as you can get. Good chance your exchange student hasn't tried it.

It depends on how good your spoken, written and comprehension skills are, plus your grades, plus your acceptance into a college. It can take anywhere from 3 months to never, depending on how well you qualify. But you are 15, what is your plan, after high school or what? Good luck
2 :
if you want to get one right away, that's going to be pretty hard. foreign students aren't allowed to attend public school on a student visa for more than one year. even then you would need to pay tuition to attend and get an I-20 student form and be registered in the student database, SEVIS. most public schools don't feel like doing the paperwork. Or, you can attend a private school for the next 3 years on a student visa, if you can afford the tuition and can find one to take you. or you can apply to a university or college later and apply for a student visa after that. once you get accepted and get all the paperwork together, you should be able to get an interview appointment within a couple weeks and if you are approved, a visa about a week after that.

What is appropriate workout attire for a young woman in Guadalajara, Mexico?

What is appropriate workout attire for a young woman in Guadalajara, Mexico?
I am a student who is planning to study abroad in Guadalajara for a semester. I have read that workout attire and shorts are not considered appropriate in Mexico. Is this true? What do I wear while working out? Is it abnormal for a woman to jog or go to the gym?

No. you can dress wathever you like, this are myths that people said. My suggestion is that you came here, and see all the people, and how womans dress, then you can see whats appropiate and whats not, but workout attire its ok, imagine us working out in ponchos and sombreros. Sorry for the bad english. Best Wishes.
2 :
exactly the same as you would wear if your mother saw you.
3 :
Guadalajara is a very cosmopolitan city. Women follow modern fashion (a lot of designers come from Guadalajara - I really like clothes from the retail chain LOB which, I believe, was founded there). Most women make an effort to look nice when they're out in public. Depending on where you're from in the States, you may find that people dress a bit more formally or conservatively than what you're used to in the U.S. Perhaps what you read is that workout attire is not appropriate for non-gym situations. That's pretty much true. I used to live and work in Guadalajara and women take pride in their appearance. (Jalisco state is famed for its Tapatia beauties.) Generally, women don't run around town doing errands in sweatpants and T-shirts. And you don't see many women wearing shorts in the city - that's considered beach- or resortwear. I was once chastised at work (I taught English) because my pants were too much like jeans (even though they weren't denim.) However, if you are indeed working out, regular workout clothes are perfectly fine. Yes, women go to gyms, and many make an effort to look good while they do it. Others just go in T-shirts and shorts. Women do jog, but I don't recall seeing women just jogging down streets. Usually they go to a park or a track where there are other people jogging. That's also the safest way to do it. Have fun in Guadalajara. It's absolutely beautiful and the people are very warm and friendly. Be sure to get out a bit and travel around Jalisco state. It's the cultural heart of Mexico.
4 :
Lorena Ochoa (LPGA Golf star and national Mexican hero) jogs in Guadalajara when she's home. It would be safer to find someone to run with if you can.

Can an international student go to a different college in the summer?
I'm on my second semester at New Mexico State University. This summer, I want to take a few (transferable) classes, but I'd like to take them at Pima Community College in Arizona, where my grandmother lives. I wouldn't have to pay housing that way and classes are cheaper. Can an international student take classes at a different school over the summer? Do I have to arrange anything in particular with either school? I imagine I'd have to talk to the community college about it either way.

Don't bother. Let him use his AMERICAN education, which US taxpayers probably paid for, to help his own country change from a cockroach infested cesspool to a country that cleans up their own mess. If you don't like my answer, feel free to GO BACK TO MEXICO!! We've had ENOUGH of Mexican crime and YOU should do something about that. They are YOUR people!!
2 :
You can not! He must be a relative in order to petition for him.
3 :
perhaps you could sponsor him for a student visa Go see an Aila lawyer for the possibilities
4 :
there really isn't any way to do this directly. you have to be a close relative to sponsor someone as an immigrant. about the most you could do would be to promise to pay this kid's tuition and offer room and board to allow him to attend college. Other than that, what sort of sponsorship did you have in mind? considering that he's lived illegally in the US for most of his life, his chances of being approved for a student visa are very poor, but it's not absolutely impossible.
5 :
Can't be done. Only family can petition for someone to come here.

You are going to need a LOT of money to live in Canada - the canadian government will NOT be providing you with everything. You have to pay for all your own tuition fees, books, accommodations, bills & utilities, transportation, entertainment and medical care. You also need to have good enough grades to get into a Canadian college. I bet you have attended school in the States so now u wanna go to college using the Student Visa. Well, you have to go to admissions of the College that u wanna attend and they will explain you about how to fill the I 20 Form and how much money u must have in the bank. Now a relative of you must make the phone call in Mexico to set the appointment for your interview. U have to pay around 150 dollars (www.google.com.mx (keywords: mexico us embassy or monterrey us consulate) ) They will give you the interview within 1 month or less. But you must apply at least 30 days before your course starts. You cannot apply before that. Read all the information in the website Now I have bad news because: I really wonder about the time when they type your name in the system and if they find your school records then probably will deny you the visa. We need to know how the US Embassy System works so in that way we can know if that affects you or not.
2 :
You need to apply through the college you will be going to. Check out the admissions page on their web page, for starters, searching for 'international students'. You can go to uscis.gov or the US state department web page for visa details but the college applies for you.
3 :
You first would need to apply to your chosen university, you can find all of the admission requirements, fees, procedures and application forms to apply as an international student on the schools website (just Google it). Once you have applied and been accepted, the university will issue you what is known an the Form I-20 and with the I-20 you then have to pay the SEVIS fee and with the SEVIS fee receipt and your I-20, you can then schedule an interview at the American Embassy in Mexico. Which means you must go back home to attend the interview as student visas are not issued in the United States; it must be done at an Embassy or Consulate abroad.
4 :
Unless you are fabulously wealthy you'll find it impossible to pay tuition at the Foreign Student Rate. The good news is that the United States does not hold your illegal alien status against you until you reach your 18th birthday. If you leave before reaching 18 and 1/2 there will be no ban on returning legally. If you wait until you are between 18 and 1/2 and 19 you'll face a ban of 3 to 5 years. If you are still here on your 19th birthday you'll be banned for 10 years.
5 :
I don't know about any kind of ban. From what I read if worst comes to worst they make you leave the country for 1 year before applying for permanent citizenship or changing status in certain ways. I'm no expert however. I did search online and found the following you might want to check out: http://www.visalaw.com/02mar4/12mar402.html I have friends who worked off the books while they put themselves through college on a student visa. It's very hard but can be done. If you can afford it then I'd recommend getting an immigration lawyer now to advise you. Also start preparing now for what you plan to do after you have a degree. You can read about work visas here: http://www.istudentcity.com/immigration/imm_permission_h1b.asp These were just two sites I found by doing a quick search on yahoo. There are numerous others.

Can i apply for a student visa?
My friend was brought by his parents at the age of 8. Started 3rd grade and now is a Senior. He wants to know if going back to mexico and getting a student visa will be easier for him since he was here for a long period of time. He doesnt want to live in mexico because he doesnt know anyone. What is the penalty he will face when he goes back to mexico and asks for a visa since he was already in a US High school?
Immigration - 2 Answers

There will be no penalty as long as he is under 18, but it will complicate the situation terribly. Provide more information. What status he currently has? What status his parents have? You can visit "Free Immigration Procedure Support (FIPS)" Facebook group and ask this question with more details over there.
2 :
He won't face any penalty if he leaves before he is 18 1/2. If he stays here from the ages of 18 1/2 to 19,he will get a 3 year ban. If he stays after the age of 19,he will get a 10 year ban. When he gets to Mexico,he can apply for a student visa if he is accepted at a US university and has the money to pay the very expensive international tuition costs.

What is needed to take a family friends minor child into Mexico for vacation?
We are going on a weekend vacation to Mexico. Our daughter wants to bring her best friend who is a daughter of a family we have been friends with for years. Do we need anything specific to take her into Mexico with us? We all have passports. She has a birth certificate and a student ID from her school with her photo.

1 :
I'm pretty sure she needs a passport and I think there's a form that needs to be filled out and signed by the girls parents saying it is okay to take her across the border.
2 :
You will need a written form of consent from the parents. Photocopy of their Id's, and proper identification of the child. Also need passport and personal Identification.
3 :
Most important she will need a notarized letter from both parents she's allowed to leave the country with you. If you guys are traveling by ground all you need is a birth certificate and an id, but if traveling by air she will need a passport.
4 :
If you are FLYING, she will need a passport. otherwise, she needs her birth certificate. YOU must have a letter signed by BOTH PARENTS and notarized giving you permission to take the child with you to Mexico. See website below and scroll down to section on "Minors".
5 :
written letter from her parents. return tickets
6 :
depends on your style of travel so do lots of research!!!

Did the girl police chief in Mexico plan this whole event to get her and her daughter to America?

Did the girl police chief in Mexico plan this whole event to get her and her daughter to America?
It seems like a perfect plan. She was a criminal justice student and knew that if she took office in Mexico she would be threatened then her and her daughter could legally come to America and be granted asylum. This doesn't seem like the actions of a Brave girl trying to bring order back to her drug gang infested city?

What is a good party hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for college students?

What is a good party hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for college students?
Me and a couple of my college aged buddies are headed down to Puerto Vallarta during the second week of May. I need a good hotel that either has a club on the resort, has a lot of pool/drinking activities, and/or is close to "El Malecon". I was thinking about the Krystal. What are the good clubs to go to down there? Thanks for any help!!!

we went to PV for my senior trip.. we stayed at the bueno ventura .. it was really nice we used the ping pong tables near the pool to play beer pong.. and we walked to most of the clubs and restaurants. the best club is the ZOO.. and if you go on certain days to Collage there will be a foam party
2 :
Paradise Village. It's Huge!
3 :
Krystal is not very close to the malecon...long walk! I just came back from P.V. and stayed at the Plaza Pelicanos Grand Beach Resort. It would be superb for your question, yet also a bit of a walk to centro. We walk one way and take a taxi back cause then we can't walk! Much fun for all, great food, pool and drinking games, shows right there, nice beach,VERY good drinks, friendly vendors.....friendly helpful everyone! Hot tubs, at least one heated pool. and 3 others, in-pool bars in pools. It is not far from clubs, either, and a cab to the malecon might cost $5...They also have jet skis, para sailing, the banana boat rides, diving and can help with discounted tours, etc. Do go 'All-Inclusive' !!

What is the easiest way to deal with money when staying long-term in Mexico?

What is the easiest way to deal with money when staying long-term in Mexico?
I'm a college student, and I'm going to be studying abroad in Mexico for a semester. What is the easiest way to deal with money there? It seems that the cheapest way is to just use a credit card as much as possible (there is a fee for using a credit card, but there is also a fee for using an ATM or getting a wire transfer), but I'm wondering if it might make sense to convert a good amount of money at a bank or currency exchange in the states before going to Mexico, or if the exchange rate there would be as significant as the fee of a credit card or whatever. Can anybody help me? Also, any tips in general about living in Mexico are appreciated. I've taken a preparation course and done some reading, so advice such as "Don't drink the water" is rather redundant, but if you have some little-known advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

always be careful in foriegn countries they try to swindle you just like in america but with a different tactic.
2 :
The easiest way to handle your money in Mexico is to find an international bank that has affiliates in Mexico and USA. This way you can avoid any transaction fees that would be associated with using ATMs. Credit Cards should ONLY be used in reputable malls/hotels/restaurants. You are going to need cash for most transactions. I would recommend Citibank, HSBC or Bank of America. HSBC is in Mexico, while Citibank and Bank of Am have Mexican affiliates ( Banamex and Santander). It helps to do some research on cultural differences before coming (little things that can be offensive etc.) because you might be surprised. Some Mexicans get annoyed at foreigners because they "slam doors". Cultural research can also help ease culture shock and allow your time to be more enjoyable. No extra advice for living in Mexico-- come to Mex with no expectations and enjoy the undiscovered!
3 :
The safest and most convenient way of dealing with money is to use your ATM card to get cash as you need it. Check with your bank to be sure you can use their card here. If not, then open an account at Bank of America...their cards can be used in Mexico with no problem as they are partners with a Mexican bank...Santander Serfin. You can use your credit card at major stores like supermarkets and Walmart, but not at the little shops. Do not bring a large amount of cash with you. Drink only bottled water...like EVERYBODY else. Relax, enjoy yourself, and have a great time.
4 :
You don't say where you will be staying, it it happens to be Cuernavaca, sign up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CuernAds/ to get in touch with the foreign community here. About bringing money in to Mexico, I always use my credit card at the window in the bank. They charge about $4.50 for the service and I have gotten up to $5,000 US at one time. The exchange rate is okay and there's no additional charges. You don't want to use your card just anywhere, it can be cloned and you'll find you just bought a bunch of stuff you never knew about. The best exchange rates are at the airport in Mexico city. Best advice? Learn Spanish! Get a Mexican girlfriend!
5 :
This must be an exciting time for you! It sounds like you've done some background work. I'd also advise speaking to someone who, like you, has lived in Mexico. Typically when I travel internationally, I exchange enough cash at the airport to get me to my destination and a little extra. I put spending money in my front pocket and the rest in a money belt tucked inside my pants. We spent a week in Mexico City and took day trips to Cuernavaca and Taxco. It's not wise to flash money. Though we had no issues, I'd remove my money in a restroom or behind closed doors just to be safe and not draw attention to myself. My primary goal is to remain safe.
6 :
Just use your ATM card to get cash. When I was down there, the fee for getting money out was minimal, and the exchange rate made up for it. For example, if I got out 1000 pesos, I would just estimate it as $100 U.S. It would actually be about $95, then with about $2 in fees, the actual total for the transaction was about $97. Then again, maybe I just had a good bank back home that didn't charge me twice for using another bank's ATM. Have a back up plan in case you lose your card. Many places (even some hotels) don't take credit cards. Tips: be very polite. Always greet people with "Buenas dias," "Buenas tardes," or "Buenas Noches". Greet people in stores (or markets) politely before doing business. It can be hard to break large bills, so plan ahead and save some small bills/change for bus rides, bottles of water and other small purchases. Try different things and have fun!
7 :
All good tips here. My best is...tip everybody, all service people, kid in the grocery store who bags your purchases, guy at the gas station. Small change brings big dividends. Smile a lot, try to learn the language, enjoy the experience.

Start with $50k and go from there http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html
2 :
well. first you need to be accepted by a school, and then they'll issue you an I-20 student form and register you in the student database, SEVIS. at that point, you can apply for the visa. the visa interview fee is $140. the rest of the cost will depend on the tuition of the school that accepts you.
3 :
Not if you live in a Border town like Juarez or Tijuana. They make special border crossing cards for commuting students. I don't know about cost or time.

Hi, I want to have a cruise to Mexico. How much does the vise cost for an international student living in USA?
Other - Mexico - 3 Answers

That depends on where you are from. The normal fee if you need a visa is $36 (USD) Here is a link to see if you even need a tourist visa. http://www.consulmexny.org/eng/visas_fmt.htm
2 :
If you are on a cruise, they will take care of the "tourist visa" which is actually just a little card. Last I knew it cost about $22.00 USD. Just call your cruise line and ask them. This is not something you need to do ahead of time. It will be taken care of on the ship, just like it is when you fly to Mexico.
3 :
the current price is US $23. or 270 pesos. For a cruise or an airline flight, it will be included in your fare. They will give you the form before you go ashore. Keep it, since you have to turn it in when you leave. If you go by car, you w ill ahve to pay it separately at a bank.

You'll be fine. . . I did almost the same thing (from Mexico City to Oaxaca) last year, and I didn't have any problems. And I was all alone!
3 :
Yeah you'll be fine, most of the crimes happen at the border and not all over the country like many poeple think. I've been in mexico many times, i studied there and lived for some months nothing bad happend to me. everybody was very nice to me.
4 :
Yes, if you grab your purses or put them below your feet when you sleep. The places that you will visit are peaceful and very reasonably safe. Most people are tourist friendly, but don't push: if don't have to mention you're americans, don't do it.
5 :
Like many others here,I also think you will be just fine.On the late night buses it is not unusual to be stopped and boarded at random military checkpoints during the night. They usually just do a cursory search and you are on your way again in a few minutes. The only reason I mention it is that it can be a little disconcerting if you have never had it happen before and are not expecting it. Buen Viaje! jaun23
6 :
NOT AS SAFE IKNOW OF THREE PEOPLE THAT WERE ROBBED AT NIGHT. ONE JUST LAST YEAR. NO HARM DONE AND THEY GOT $200.00 YOUR ODDS ARE 99% THAT YOU WILL BE FINE

Oh yes. just like May berry, only safer

know anything about traveling in mexico? dangerous for college students?

know anything about traveling in mexico? dangerous for college students?
My friends and i (two girls two guyz) are planning a trip to backpack through mexico. From the peninsula all the way up to United States. We plan on camping out and staying in hostels. Maybe hitch hiking taking a bus. We dont know what to expect. How expensive things are, is a bus a good way to travel?? What is our biggest concerns? We might just end up exploring the peninsula to stay by other tourists and keep safe. Is that a better idea?
Other - Mexico - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Mexico really isn't a backpacking country....simply because you have big cities accustomed to tourists and small towns....that generally aren't. The big cities however are notorious for petty crimes as well as kidnappings. Often times busses are stopped in highway stretches by bands of criminals....again not fun. But for the most part you can definitly bus your way through Mexico.
2 :
Four college students with backpacks will stick out like a sore thumb in many countries. I am a single woman living in Mexico and I travel by bus every weekend, sometimes alone. Sure, I stand out because of my blonde hair, but I've never had problems. In the case of Central Mexico and the Pacific side, the buses are very nice and super cheap, with TVs and bathrooms even for 2nd class. Bus lines such as ETN (www.etn.com.mx) and Primera Plus (www.primeraplus.com.mx) have websites where you can check the scheulde and get an idea of the prices. There are many hostels throughout Mexico and small towns with no hostels always have some lodging (you might have to ask around with the locals). The biggest factor in my opinion is your willingness to at least try to speak Spanish. Mexicans are very polite people, but you will have a much better experience if you make an attempt to speak the language (my apologies if you speak Spanish already). Don't assume that just because you're in a tourist area you're safe. Actually, I've had much better and more comfortable experiences in places off the tourist track. Tourism somehow brings out the worst in people. One thing I never do is carry a lot of cash on me. I know someone who took $4,000 US out of the bank in Mexico City, and walked around with it in his back pocket. It looked like he had one huge butt cheek. Not surprisingly, someone just plucked it right out of his pocket, but that would probably happen in most any city if you're stupid enough to carry that kind of cash on you. There are ATMs everywhere and there's no need to walk around with a wad of bills in your pocket, or with an expensive camera hanging around your neck. The interior of Mexico is amazing. Food is cheap if you're willing to experiment. A giant tamale on the street is about 50 cents and fills you up for a while. There are also "gorditas" which are blue or white corn filled with beans, meat, fava beans, or other things for about a buck. You can get fresh squeezed orange juice or fruit cups from street carts for about a dollar also. Eat lots of yogurt to keep the good bacteria balanced in your gut. If you four are thinking of trekking the country, I say go for it. You definitley won't regret it.
3 :
Depends where you are going but looking like a "foreigner with backpacks" may look dangerous and vulnerable just depending where you going. All depends where you going but I think it is safe @ day time and in places where there is alot people . HOPEFULLY SOME OF YOU SPEAK SPANISH additionally have all emergency phones handy
4 :
People travel in Mexico all the time. There are many special place to see and do. I sell insurance for people to drive their vehicle into Mexico. I have much info ..maps, resturants, ect. To help you I would need to know more of the route you will be taking. How long will you all be there. No guns. Bullets, Don't drive at night, Camping and the beach is fine but I wouldn't camp unless there are others around. don't be secluded. There are places all over the place to camp that you will be safe. If you would like to talk more to me you can email me and I will help you do some research.

Is Mexico City safe (college student wanting to study abroad)?
My parents who are both Mexican but not from Mexico city warn me not to go but I really want to study abroad for one semester there. They say its too dangerous and polluted and that I should go somewhere else (Not Latin America) I think it won't be as expensive as going to Europe and it will be a different language. Also its close enough where I could come back home for a week if I get home sick. I would be studying at UNAM university which I hear is pretty good. What do you all think. I've never been to a big city except for Los Angeles and New York and I really like both so I want to study in a big city that has a lot of things to do. I feel like Mexico city is the best choice for me but I don't know if it is safe.. I want to know what you guys' perspective is on this. Thanks.

Mexico City is not as high on the most polluted list as it once was. Most of the most polluted cities are now in East Asia. Mexico City is one of the safest places in the country, but it is a mega city so there is a lot of crime---however not as much as in Mexico State which surrounds the City on three sides. Also almost all of Mexico is very prone to seismic activity. Mexico City is a real city. It has a lot of nice and interesting things, but it is not as good of a place to be as L.A., NYC. Chicago, San Francisco, Boston or similar important cities in the USA. Frankly we live in Mexico and my son lives and studies in Mexico City and we feel that he is safer there than in the city where we actually live. Next semester he will be going to Europe to study and we are very happy about that and hope that he will do his Masters in Europe, USA, or Canada. Maybe you would like Madrid. It has over 5 million people. You could practice your Spanish there- they speak it a little differently from Mexicans, AND you would be in Europe. Mexico City is really not that cheap.

How easy is it to get a visa for studying or working in Mexico?

How easy is it to get a visa for studying or working in Mexico?
I'm European, from an EU state. How easy is it to get a student visa (I have finished university, so would need to enroll as an independent student probably) or a work visa to live in Mexico? I would be interested in either studying or working for a year in Monterrey. If work visa is relatively easy to get, should I first get a job offer from a company in Mexico? I'm a bit curious if I should just start to apply for jobs - I'm afraid that hiring international people could be as expensive for the companies as in US... If anyone has got a work or student visa and permits as a European student, how much did they cost and how fast were they to get? What do I need before contacting Mexican embassy or consulate?

do yourself a favor, all states that you live in for more than 30 days, consider you a resident, they are no longer leineient like they used to be, this is a tax fraud, to not register, and now the police can, and do impound vehicles for unpaid registration fees. The fees start the day you moved, instead of trying to have your cake and eat it to, plan on going down with your vehicle, and title, get the car registered and pay the fees for licensing and title (keep your old plates, for if you move back ok?) this is so much easier, and less hassle , why would you look over your shoulder all those long months wondering when some bored rookie cop is going to stop and ask you? get it over with, avoid several hundred dollars in impound fees, it sucks yes, but use your brain, its cheaper and easier to do this voluntarily, than to make some cop go through the process, impound your vehicle and then you have to fix all this stuff(while the car is stuck in impound too???) good luck.
2 :
no.... but why would you need/want to ???? Full time College students attending school away from home have special privileges. They are considered to still be a resident of their home state while attending school out of state.

If you are going to the Frontier zone only you don't need anything. When you pass the border they will just waive you through. The frontier zone covers all of the two Baja California states and an area from the border until about 25 miles south of the border in the other border states. At that point there is a check point and they do a through inspection of all your car papers and issue you a permit to enter the rest of the country. That is where you need the letter from the leasing company. That letter is up to the lease company. Maybe they don't care and will easily grant the letter. On the other hand maybe going into Mexico is prohibited and they will not issue it.

2 :
NO, i saw it on Futurama a few week ago
3 :
No need for tourist if its less then 6 months. They'll check the passport at the border and stamp it.
4 :
No he does not Mexico allows people to stay in the country for 6 months with no paperwork. All he needs is his passport and student visa to cross the border.
5 :
Does his U.S. student visa allow him to leave and reenter the U.S? Not all do. Some of them are issued for one entry into this country only. It never hurts to check with a Consulate or immigration office when in doubt. It would not do for him to leave the U.S. and not be able to get back home. (Many foreign exchange students are issued one-entry student visas to the U.S. He should check to be sure his is not this type.)
6 :
I think, when he leaves the immigration office, all he needs is to inform Mexican immigration that he will stay for 5 days. It is Mexican immigration he will have to talk with.Of course, he too has to pass through U.S. immigration, or file a deportation card even if Mexico is just the other side of the border. Best, to consult both immigration. Be very careful, America is just itching to throw all illegals outside their border or outside their sea limit. If I were you people, play safe. This is not the right time. Everything is so hot because of the Arizona Law which targets the illegal. What if he lost his passport, or stolen from him, what then. He definitely will be in for more trouble. Postpone it. Its to hot at this time.

YES! Mexican Immigration Laws are a lot stricter than the United States!!! I wish foreigners would quit using our borders as a see-saw, thinking they can bounce from one side to the other anytime they damn well please!!!! When I was in Europe, I had to carry my passport around with me, and when I stayed at a hotel, the management demanded to see my docoments! Even in my own country!

Will my New Mexico Tax Rebate be applied to my defaulted Federal Student Loan?

Will my New Mexico Tax Rebate be applied to my defaulted Federal Student Loan?
Citizens in New Mexico will be receiving an additional tax rebate from the state if they filed their 2007 tax returns, here is the link to the website confirming this: www.tax.state.nm.us/rebate.htm My question is this: will my rebate be applied to my defaulted student loan? This happened with my 2007 federal tax return and stimulus check as well. Now, I DID receive my 2007 state return from New Mexico, as it was not applied to my loan. So, is it that only federal tax returns and rebates are applied to student loans or does it also apply to state returns and rebates as well? jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj You don't know the circumstances as to why my loan is defaulted, dont need the high and mighty responses, answer the damn question or go back to your miserable lives, hateful, insignificant detractors! Thanks for the responses, everyone. The hateful detractor comment was to the first 2 people that gave smart a$$ remarks instead of answers to the question.

The way it is supposed to work, the student loan will get it. But frequently the IRS misses things like this. As one hateful, insignificant detractor to another.

In life things happen. A defaulted loan does not make you a bad person. It would be better, however, for you to take care of this before it becomes extremely problematic. This is the information I have found. I hope it helps. Quoted from website: It is extremely important to contact NM Student Loans before missing your first payment so that arrangements can be made before your loan becomes delinquent. If you don't make your payments, your loan may go into default. There are many options available to help meet the repayment obligation on your student loan. Some consequences of default may include, but aren't limited to, the following: You may have litigation brought against you. Your wages may be garnished. Part or all of your state and/or federal tax refund may be intercepted. Due to legal judgment, you may have a lien placed on present and future properties. You will lose eligibility for any additional federal student financial aid You will lose the cost saving benefits of the Advantage Program Deferment and forbearance will no longer be available to you. Your default will be rarrangementsall national credit bureaus and your credit will be affected for many years. I have heard horror stories from people I knew who defaulted on student loans and did not contact the Student Loan people to make payment arrangments. As you can tell from the NM Student Loan quote (listed above) there are long reaching and serious consequences. When you get a chance visit their website, default recovery, to check out your options. Good luck.
