I'm going to mexico as an exchange student very soon?
I am going to Cuernavaca, Mexico in 4 weeks. I will attend a Spanish school and stay with a Mexican host family. I have never been an exchange student before, so I have no idea what to expect. Can anyone help me out? :) What should I expect? What are Mexican families like? What would be a good gift to give them? Chocolate, maybe? What is cuernavaca like? Will it be warm? thanks

Hello, Cuernavaca it´s my city actually, I was born here and I live here so I dont know where you´re from, but mexican people like the rest of people of Latin America have reputation of being the most friendly and hospitable people with foreigners, and Mexican people is maybe the most welcoming people, also we´re really merrymakers and we like to chill, to speak and go party a lot, many things are excuse to celebrate so don´t worry the mexican host family are going to treat you very well, they´ll try to make you feel well and to invite you to any celebration and meeting they make in order that you don´t feel like a stranger in their home. About bringing chocolate yes it would be nice chocolate has origin in Mexico so you better bring one thing that be just specific from the country or city that you come from (ex:If you´re from Japan bring a little doll dressed with a Kimono, if you´re from Scottland then you bring a wisky, if you´re from Ireland then bring a little figure of Saint Patrick or so). What is Cuernavaca like?:it´s a small tourist city, compared to other cities in Mexico it´s pretty safe and the weather is always pleasant so you don´t need to bring many coats, just a pair of jackets, the temperatures are not extremes like in Europe or other parts, in fact we don´t know what the snow is because it never snows here, this is "the city of the eternal spring" Alexander Von Humbolt gave it this name, because of it´s great weather the most part of the year, those days there have been some rains but very quiet so bring a jacket, the distances here are very short so you don´t need a car, you can take a bus and the transport is cheap, you don´t take more that 20 minutes to get from one point to another. the temperature right now is 64°F (18°C) and it just rained a little but the air is not cold, just a little wet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca is a beautiful place in Mexico. Due to Spanish colonization you will find that much of the population is white (blonde hair, blue green eyes, white skin) Mexicans in general are very friendly, and treat all visitors of its country very highly. As for the host family, most likely it will be someone wealthy considering they are involved with the university. A great gift would be something simple that is unique, and from the USA. Have fun in Mexico! it is amazing and you will love it

Cuernavaca calls itself "la ciudad de la eterna primavera," the city of eternal spring. Usually at this time of year it's too dry to be springlike although the temperature is pleasant. As I write this central Mexico is experiencing very unusual heavy rains-February is usually one of the driest months. The last time this happened, 1990, it rained all through February up until beginning of May. And then the rainy season starts at the end of May. This is a very unusual weather year so far. usually in Cuernavaca in the winter you can dress lightly during the day and get by with a sweater or light jacket at night in the winter and rainy season. In the warm months -March thru early May and end of Oct.thru early Nov- it gets pretty hot. I suggest you wait until a day or so before you come, and check the weather frequently on weather.com or something similar. Cuernavaca has several historical attractions from the prehispanic to the colonial to the Mexican Revolution period. Many of the embassies and large international companies in Mexico City, have weekend places in Cuernavaca for their employees. The area attracts a lot of tourism both national and international. It is one of the more attractive larger cities in Mexico. Mexican families are usually warm and sharing and very open to visitors and will try to make you happy and comfortable. You will find them to be some of the nicest people in the world. It's funny that mention chocolate. Chocolate originated in Mexico. The word chocolate is of Mexican origin. You will probably be introduced to a new (to you) concept of hot chocolate here. If you want to give them some sort of assorted mix of choclate candies, the fruit and nut things, they would probably enjoy that. Mexicans mostly don't appreciate dark chocolate, being more of the milk chocolate camp. You might consider giving them something that the area you are from is known for - Georgia peanuts, New England or Canadian maple syrup- something along those lines. Whatever you bring them will be received with thanks. Have a great time
4 :
Oooh that's a nice adventure for you. Firstly be friendly and polite with your host family and bring them a gift typical of where you're from. Mexicans are generally very interested in people and will ask about your family (at length) and you- you may find questions quite personal, so be polite. Cuernavaca is lovely. Eternal spring. Low key yet things to do and friendly. You should make the most of practising Spanish and being social. Good luck!

Try the California Department of Education. Just give them a call and they will be able to help you. Chances are it will have to go through the State Department and the Department of Education the website for the U.S. Department of Education is www.ed.gov you might be able to get some information there. Good Luck!! =)
2 :
You can't apply for a student visa for someone else. He can't apply for himself either. His college will help him obtain the visa once he is accepted.

I wish that Jason G had a more respectful and hospitable attitude towards a fifteen-year-old girl who is a guest in his country, but I'm not his mother. Even if you go to public school, your cousin (not being legally resident in US--a student is not a "resident") would have to pay tuition fees. I would imagine that the cost would be prohibitive.
4 :
You cannot apply for a student visa for your cousin; only she can do that. And she can only qualify for a US student visa if she applies to and is accepted by a US college. Once she is accepted, she can then apply for the visa - if she can convince the consular officer that she does not intend to stay in the US. She is not legally allowed to attend public school in the US, except for a single year and even then must pay, as was already stated. Here is more student visa information: http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1270.html

First of all you'll need your passport, and will have to have passed the Spanish language proficiency test, unless you are applying into a fairly rare English course. They will have requirements listed on their website, or you can e mail/call the admissions office. They will want transcripts, anything past that like writings and references will differ from school to school.

If you ask anyone living there, I'm sure they'll tell you somewhere in America.

Hi , Mexico city is a huge place , so living in a centric safe area is very well recommended , as a girl born here I would definitely recommend La Condesa , one of the most famous neighborhoods in the city , everything is on a walking distance , you have 3 metro stations around and you are right in the center of the city and its action. My boyfriend from france stayed in a great place in La Condesa , a company that offers rooms fully furbished and equipped in shared huge apartments at a very reasonable prices, check it out it might work for you is called liveincondesa : http://www.liveincondesa.com you can also try craislist.com hope I have being useful Cheers and enjoy your stay
3 :
Colonia Cuauhtémoc, behind the American Embassy located on Avenida Reforma near the Angel monument, or Colonia Juárez which is basically on the opposite side of Reforma from the US Embassy and slightly to the east, and past that (the other side of Avenida Chapultepec) is Colonia Roma. This is a fairly decent area, easy to get to Polanco from here, and you can probably find an apartment between $7000 and $12000 pesos a month. Rent in Mexico City is expensive, but in Polanco it's even more expensive than this. You can probably find someone(s) to share with. You might find students who have space and are willing to take in another room mate for a couple of months. One of my sons lived in this area for a year while in college and liked it a lot. I hope this helps.

Is someone from Mexico studying in the US on a student visa eligible for financial aid?
Is someone from Mexico studying in the US on a student visa eligible for financial aid?
A friend is trying to earn a student visa to move here and study, would he be able to get financial aid? I'm not sure what all the rules about that are. Also, what about student loans?

well, in order to get financial aid you need to file through fafsa, which requires you a social security number. some people have a visa and social security that is not valid for employment. you can not get a loan without a social number. if a lender lets you borrow without a social you could get away with the money and can't be prosecuted because he/she doesn't exist
2 :
If your friend is here on a student visa, then no, they are not eligible for any sort of USA financial aid (grants or loans). In order for them to have gotten that visa they had to produce bank documents showing financial ability to pay for school.
3 :
NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FInancial aid is limited to US CITIZENS and PERMANENT RESIDENTS...............your friend can get a loan with a US citizen or permanent resident as a co-signor and if he/she returns back 2 Mexico without paying it becomes the debt of the co-signor
4 :
yes your friend needs to file for financial aid at fafsa.ed.gov
5 :
Need2Know is absolutely correct, no federal finacnial aid is available. Ask the school you are applying to if they have scholarships from their alumni to give to international students however.
