know anything about traveling in mexico? dangerous for college students?
My friends and i (two girls two guyz) are planning a trip to backpack through mexico. From the peninsula all the way up to United States. We plan on camping out and staying in hostels. Maybe hitch hiking taking a bus. We dont know what to expect. How expensive things are, is a bus a good way to travel?? What is our biggest concerns? We might just end up exploring the peninsula to stay by other tourists and keep safe. Is that a better idea?

Mexico really isn't a backpacking country....simply because you have big cities accustomed to tourists and small towns....that generally aren't. The big cities however are notorious for petty crimes as well as kidnappings. Often times busses are stopped in highway stretches by bands of criminals....again not fun. But for the most part you can definitly bus your way through Mexico.

Four college students with backpacks will stick out like a sore thumb in many countries. I am a single woman living in Mexico and I travel by bus every weekend, sometimes alone. Sure, I stand out because of my blonde hair, but I've never had problems. In the case of Central Mexico and the Pacific side, the buses are very nice and super cheap, with TVs and bathrooms even for 2nd class. Bus lines such as ETN (www.etn.com.mx) and Primera Plus (www.primeraplus.com.mx) have websites where you can check the scheulde and get an idea of the prices. There are many hostels throughout Mexico and small towns with no hostels always have some lodging (you might have to ask around with the locals). The biggest factor in my opinion is your willingness to at least try to speak Spanish. Mexicans are very polite people, but you will have a much better experience if you make an attempt to speak the language (my apologies if you speak Spanish already). Don't assume that just because you're in a tourist area you're safe. Actually, I've had much better and more comfortable experiences in places off the tourist track. Tourism somehow brings out the worst in people. One thing I never do is carry a lot of cash on me. I know someone who took $4,000 US out of the bank in Mexico City, and walked around with it in his back pocket. It looked like he had one huge butt cheek. Not surprisingly, someone just plucked it right out of his pocket, but that would probably happen in most any city if you're stupid enough to carry that kind of cash on you. There are ATMs everywhere and there's no need to walk around with a wad of bills in your pocket, or with an expensive camera hanging around your neck. The interior of Mexico is amazing. Food is cheap if you're willing to experiment. A giant tamale on the street is about 50 cents and fills you up for a while. There are also "gorditas" which are blue or white corn filled with beans, meat, fava beans, or other things for about a buck. You can get fresh squeezed orange juice or fruit cups from street carts for about a dollar also. Eat lots of yogurt to keep the good bacteria balanced in your gut. If you four are thinking of trekking the country, I say go for it. You definitley won't regret it.

Depends where you are going but looking like a "foreigner with backpacks" may look dangerous and vulnerable just depending where you going. All depends where you going but I think it is safe @ day time and in places where there is alot people . HOPEFULLY SOME OF YOU SPEAK SPANISH additionally have all emergency phones handy

People travel in Mexico all the time. There are many special place to see and do. I sell insurance for people to drive their vehicle into Mexico. I have much info ..maps, resturants, ect. To help you I would need to know more of the route you will be taking. How long will you all be there. No guns. Bullets, Don't drive at night, Camping and the beach is fine but I wouldn't camp unless there are others around. don't be secluded. There are places all over the place to camp that you will be safe. Is Mexico City safe (college student wanting to study abroad)?
My parents who are both Mexican but not from Mexico city warn me not to go but I really want to study abroad for one semester there. They say its too dangerous and polluted and that I should go somewhere else (Not Latin America) I think it won't be as expensive as going to Europe and it will be a different language. Also its close enough where I could come back home for a week if I get home sick. I would be studying at UNAM university which I hear is pretty good. What do you all think. I've never been to a big city except for Los Angeles and New York and I really like both so I want to study in a big city that has a lot of things to do. I feel like Mexico city is the best choice for me but I don't know if it is safe.. I want to know what you guys' perspective is on this. Thanks.

Mexico City is not as high on the most polluted list as it once was. Most of the most polluted cities are now in East Asia. Mexico City is one of the safest places in the country, but it is a mega city so there is a lot of crime---however not as much as in Mexico State which surrounds the City on three sides. Also almost all of Mexico is very prone to seismic activity. Mexico City is a real city. It has a lot of nice and interesting things, but it is not as good of a place to be as L.A., NYC. Chicago, San Francisco, Boston or similar important cities in the USA. Frankly we live in Mexico and my son lives and studies in Mexico City and we feel that he is safer there than in the city where we actually live. Next semester he will be going to Europe to study and we are very happy about that and hope that he will do his Masters in Europe, USA, or Canada. Maybe you would like Madrid. It has over 5 million people. You could practice your Spanish there- they speak it a little differently from Mexicans, AND you would be in Europe. Mexico City is really not that cheap.

How easy is it to get a visa for studying or working in Mexico?
How easy is it to get a visa for studying or working in Mexico?
I'm European, from an EU state. How easy is it to get a student visa (I have finished university, so would need to enroll as an independent student probably) or a work visa to live in Mexico? I would be interested in either studying or working for a year in Monterrey. If work visa is relatively easy to get, should I first get a job offer from a company in Mexico? I'm a bit curious if I should just start to apply for jobs - I'm afraid that hiring international people could be as expensive for the companies as in US... If anyone has got a work or student visa and permits as a European student, how much did they cost and how fast were they to get? What do I need before contacting Mexican embassy or consulate?

I'm a grad student at New Mexico State Univ. However my research is in Long Island NY. I'll be staying there for about 18 months. I'm worried about my insurance and car inspection..... Can I get my car inspected in New York, with New Mexico Registration?

do yourself a favor, all states that you live in for more than 30 days, consider you a resident, they are no longer leineient like they used to be, this is a tax fraud, to not register, and now the police can, and do impound vehicles for unpaid registration fees. The fees start the day you moved, instead of trying to have your cake and eat it to, plan on going down with your vehicle, and title, get the car registered and pay the fees for licensing and title (keep your old plates, for if you move back ok?) this is so much easier, and less hassle , why would you look over your shoulder all those long months wondering when some bored rookie cop is going to stop and ask you? get it over with, avoid several hundred dollars in impound fees, it sucks yes, but use your brain, its cheaper and easier to do this voluntarily, than to make some cop go through the process, impound your vehicle and then you have to fix all this stuff(while the car is stuck in impound too???) good luck.

Hey, my sister lives in Mexico, she is in her last year of High school over there and she knows how to speak English fully (she lived here in the US for years). She would like to study in a college in the US. She Knows she has to take the SAT's but she's in Mexico, is there somewhere in Mexico where she can take the SAT? Also, Right know i'm a freshman in highschool here in the US, in one of the top 10 hig schools in the US. There is a posibility that I may have to relocate to either Monterrey, or Guadalajara ( my parents are being transferred there because of their company). I take my education seriously because i would like to go to Harvard, Ivy league universities. What are the best High schools in these 2 towns that provide the best education, especially in English???? And what would my sister have to do to come to a university here in the U.S.??? Thak you sooooo much. By good High school in those 2 cities, I mean like a TOP one. One that will not hinder my chances of getting into an IVY league University. Right know I'm in an MSE progrram in High school, (Math Science and Engineering). I need your help please

Does anyone know about bringing a leased vehicle from the US to Mexico?
I want to bring my leased car from the US into Mexico. I know I have to get a notarized letter from the leasing company but how easily is this letter obtained? Do leasing companies readily give out this letter? I'm a student in Mexico, so I have an FM3 visa and will be living here for 3 years. Thanks!

If you are going to the Frontier zone only you don't need anything. When you pass the border they will just waive you through. The frontier zone covers all of the two Baja California states and an area from the border until about 25 miles south of the border in the other border states. At that point there is a check point and they do a through inspection of all your car papers and issue you a permit to enter the rest of the country. That is where you need the letter from the leasing company. That letter is up to the lease company. Maybe they don't care and will easily grant the letter. On the other hand maybe going into Mexico is prohibited and they will not issue it.
